Low-cost index funds

    hi chaps,

Maybe stoopid question but where can I find out about low cost index funds to invest in?

I have a small amount of shares on TD direct investing, which I'm really just using to learn about the markets. I believe I can use TDDirect to purchase UK and Irish Exchange Traded Funds but again Im not sure if these are the same as index funds. I realise that index funds track the index but when you purchase them is it the same as purchasing an EFT?

Any pointers would be great, I'm very new to this but would like to try and see how index funds work.

    Thanks
