Carton O'Meara

    Hi Folks,

I played Carton house O'Meara the new layout yesterday and I will say that the new design does add to the course. You know have great views of the old house from the first and the new 18th. The new course is now a par 73 with 5 par 5's.

You start with a long par 5 up the hill, the fairway bunkers are still GUR but all others are in play. The 2nd is now a 180+ yard par 3 and the the old par 3 ( 3rd I think) is gone along with the old 18th. Removing the old par 3 has led to the only drawback of the design i.e a long walk from the 3rd green to the fourth tee but that's minor in comparison to the additions of the new layout.

Apart from that the course was in great condition and the new layout is a good addition.

    Any views?

    Kev.

How much was it to play? Never played the old layout as price was always the dominant factor and they never seem to have any scratch cups or open competitions which is a shame given that it's the home of the GUI.

It's the par 3 fourth that's gone which is generally seen as no bad thing.

The long term plan was to reduce the par 5 3rd to a par 4 and have the green of the 3rd hole nearer to the new fourth tee. The cost/benefit analysis doesn't make this work worthwhile for the moment, I believe.

I agree that it's a much stronger layout taking out the weak 1st hole, the weakish 4th hole and the weak 18th and replacing it with three very good holes.

You've gotten your wires crossed J.

This thread is about changes to O'Meara, there was a Tralee thread that was bumped that included Flyovers.

Played it yesterday in the semi open. Was in magnificent nick. Managed to shoot 2 under which I was happy about until I heard that the club's lowest man shot 6 under with a bogey on the new 18th. That put me back in my box

Pardon me, but what's a semi open?

Does the Wednesday semi-open alternate between courses from week to week there, AJ?

Can't tell you for sure Whip It, the guy that invited me said O'Meara, but I was talking to another member there, he said it was on Monty next weds.

I suppose it would make sense to rotate but not sure.

Ajcurry, I have been lucky enough to play both the Monty and the new O'meara this week and both are in great condition. The bunkers on the Monty are in great condition since the Irish open, still as daunting and deep as ever but in my opinion a lot easier to get out of due to the level of sand as its easier to get the club under the ball..

No matter what course you play your in for a treat.

Thanks Kev, I've played Monty a few times and I'm a fan so am looking forward to it.
I seem to go against the majority in the fact that I prefer Monty.
Was just keen to get a look at the new layout of O'Meara.
Should be out of the bunkers in 2 now as opposed to 3 ;)

AJ having completed my round on the New O'meara I was of the opinion the O'meara is now the number one course in carton, that was until I played the Monty. Its hard to give you a reason why as the scenary etc is all on the O'meara but if I was given the choice of both courses in their current state the Monty would win everytime.

To be honest this is the most playable I have seen the Monty in recent year.:)
For the most part the rough is ok, in parts the ball will sit down and you will need to hack out but most of the time its playable.. You will find the ball no problem 9 out 10 times...

thanks.hopefully I won't spend too much time looking for the ball in it.that and try and avoid most of the bunkers.looking forward to the challenge

    Played O Meara on Thursday,

My first outing to a top club and ill be honest, the greens were crazy good! im not a man who lands a ball on a green without it rolling off the back but the bast just sat on it.....i really see (apart from the fantastic clubhouse etc) why green fees are so expensive and why membership is the same.

Back nine is sublime and in particular 13 to 16, my god! My only gripe is the 1st and 18th holes, they had them sanded so much i found them nearly unplayable. picked my ball up on the 18th as i had enjoyed the round so much i didnt want to ruin it!

wish i had a spare 2.5k lying about to join up!
