NCT DB limit

Had my car NCT'd today, passed no bother, but was slightly worried that the exhaust may exceed the 90DB limit as it is fairly loud. Out of interest, how do they go about determining if a car should be tested for this and how do they do it?(assuming it's not done in the general test area).

    Reasons for failure...

    Exhaust Pipe:

    • Badly mounted or liable to fall off

    Silencer:
    • Missing or not functioning.

    Exhaust Assembly:
    • Badly mounted or liable to fall off.
    • Serious leaks.
    • Vehicle exhaust noise has reached or exceeded a specified level of 99dB(A).
    • Possibility of fire being caused by leaks or broken components.
    • Fumes entering passenger compartment

I assume they rev it up at some stage and test the noise level.

I measured my 850csi at between 97 and 101db (peak), but the NCT never commented.

It would be a crime if they told you that car was too loud. Maybe they wanted to hear it opened up too :D

[*]Vehicle exhaust noise has reached or exceeded a specified level of 99dB(A).

Funny thing is I got 3 separate answers on this, NCT themselves stated it was 90DB, my mechanic 95 and from previous answers on boards 99DB.

I copied and pasted the text in my post above from the current NCT Manual.

It's at the discretion of the NCT tester I believe to measure it.Could be wrong
