Trying to find info on underage girls cycling. I have a 10 year old who is interested and would like her to maybe do some races next season - she is undecided and so I need get some solid info.
Does anyone have any experience of this for this age group. What kind of distances would they be racing? Will they be lumped in with the boys of similar ages? Is so are all the girls dropped in first few km?
Would be very glad of any first hand knowledge.
    Thanks

Whereabouts are you based? For that age-group the best introduction to competitive cycling is probably BMX or track - short distances in a safe off-road environment

Unfortunately appropriate facilities are limited in Ireland, although there is an indoor BMX track in Dublin and an outdoor one in Ratoath with track cycling through the summer at Sundrive

C I will not issue a licence to race on the road until a child has reached their 10th birthday. In answer to some of your other queries, yes they will be put in along with the boys U12 except at girls specific races such as All Irelands. These girls specific races are rare due to low numbers. Some girls have been known to mix it with the lads, but yes most of them do get dropped.A little further up the age category girls are allowed race with the lads and drop a category.IE A girl U14 can ride the boys U12 races. This in the past seemed to equal it out a bit.
The maximum distance by law for U12 races is 15km.
U12 restricted gears are a roll out of 6.14 metres which is 46x16.[There are other combinations that get you close as well.

Would she consider track or BMX racing? I believe both have excellent structures for underage racing. Stepping stone to road

And a lot more fun for kids of that age. Problem is though she will probably get hooked ...

First is a track bike, then she wants gears, 105, dura ace, then carbon shoes. Before you know it it's socks at the proper length, sunglasses outside helmet straps, public distain (but secret admiration) for Rapha Clothing
