Bone augmentation methods

    I'm keen on dental implants but have been told I'll need bone augmentation, achievable via treatment involving bovine bone material.

    Would anyone know why this is done, rather than using my own bone; is it primarily cost?

    Also is it completely safe? I have to admit I was surprised when it was suggested, as I hadn't heard of this technique before.

    Generally using your own bone means having to prepare a donor site, there is usually not enough bone around the implant site to use. This is another surgical site and is sore etc. Also in large blocks donor bone is vascular and prone to breakdown and infection.

    Using artificial bone is easier, involves only one surgical site and also have better results. There are a few different types of artificial bone ask your dentist which one he uses. The artificial bone becomes your own bone with time.

    Don't think it's artificial, it's bescribed as "bovine" - I presume this is harvested from a cow.

    Are there also artificial bone methods? I'm presuming the bovine method is cheaper and maybe easier to implement? Just a bit concerned that it's totally safe as I hadn't heard of this method before.

    Artificial bone (not from your body or Xenograft) can be totally synthetic, bovine or from other humans (cadaver material). Mostly bovine bone is used as it has good long term results and decades of research.

    Its not really bovine...its starts life as bovine bone, from a heard of genetically controlled medical cows reared for the function. The bone is crushed and prepared by heating it to over 1000 C for 18 hours, incinerating any organic material and leaving only the inorganic matrix of minerals. This is then sterilised with gama radiation. There is no cow cells, protiens or prions left in it. Very safe and very reputable. It acts as a matrix for your own bone growth.

    All these materials are extremely expensive, bovine included.

    Wow that sounds incredible. So if it's completely safe then I am inclined to say I will probably go ahead. Have been quoted €8k for 3 implants inc bone augmentation and crowns, would you say that's reasonable?
