New to Voip

I'm doing a budget for my household and Eircom are in the firing line to be culled, I've a few questions to see if voip would be a better alternative to keeping the landline as I'm completely new to this.

There is a decent WISP locally whose entry level broadband package is 3Mb/s, from what I've heard you'll get the speeds you pay for from them so would this be fast enough for Voip?

I'm in Canada for at least a month a year, if I were to port my number could I use an IP phone in Canada to make and receive calls to/from my Irish number?

I'll probably get a new router and IP phone, any recommendations for either? Preferably something that's easy to setup.

    Thanks.

3Mb/1Mb download/upload respectively is more than enough. Make sure you setup QoS on your router so the IP Phone gets priority over other devices on the network.

If you're in Canada you will be able to connect as if you were at home. That's the great thing about voip. Once your on a good connection call quality is excellent.

Just a note though that its against Comreg regulations to use a geographic number whilst not in Ireland (they are geographic numbers).

You can of course get an 076 number for the most part are very inexpensive but Eircom don't include them in their call plans. Blueface give one free once you topup €5

There's a sticky with some hardware and providers here that might help.

If you're coming up to the end of a contract with Eircom I recommend if you're porting away to give 30 days notice, the cost otherwise is one months linerental. Of course if your not in a contract you'll pay that anyway for the extra month so I wouldn't bother.

Equipment wise, if its a ip phone you're after I'd recommend Yealink, Linksys and Cisco. You can use your landline you have already with a Linksys PAP2T which is discontinued, but easily gotten on ebay for under €30 delivered. This connects into your modem and gives 2 lines one of which you plug any bog-standard telephone into. Its very easy to setup, and there's a lot of guides if you search through the forum

    Hope this helps
