Advice on rollers for winter

Hi guys. theres no right or wrong with this post but i just want opinion.

I've always been a turbo trainer man and a satori pro is what i was using last winter.

I'll have time this winter and will be doing serious milage and intense sessions. have my mind set on this and it wont be changing from it.

When i used to get up at 5.30 or 6 o clock for an hour and a half on the turbo last winter i would of course have been half asleep and setting it up was a pain even though its little effort. clamp rear wheel, put front wqheel on block. clamp resistance onto bars and maybe change to cheapy wheel on rear.

my main trouble with turbo was this- i was restricted to certain areas, not being able to use upstairs because the floors are shallow and the sound travelled through very easy, and in the morning even, being pushed out into the back garden or shed to try shrink my nuts to peas.

i suppose tacx is always the first suggestion when it comes to rollers trainers (unless somebody wants to suggest otherwise but i dont see why they would or what they could choose to match) but a few questions:

-Is it worth spending an extra 60 quid going from antares to galaxia just for forward backward motion? can i really sprint on it?

-will i get a proper workout off rollers, near as intense are trainers or will i spend too much time trying to concentrate?

-whats the chances i wont have to have icicles hanging off me in the morning, i.e is it very quiet in comparison to tacx trainers?

I've never had knee trouble etc so no bother with trainers on that front.

would be keeping the turbo so maybe worth keeping trainers for afternoon sessions?

    all opinions welcome anyway, thanks!

Can't answer all of your questions, I'll hit the ones i can.

First off, I'd recommend you try to borrow a set and try them out before you purchase. One man's quiet is another woman's very loud

Not sure about the forward/backwards motion type. If i was buying again I'd definitely go for these as they look like they work. You certainly will not be out of the saddle sprinting on the fixed type.

You won't spend too much time concentrating once you get the hang of them, whether you get enough of a workout depends on your fitness level. Personally I can but I'm on the slow end of the scale, I have heard of others who can push 52*12 all day on rollers and not get enough of a workout.

More questions than answers, but hope that helps.

i have a tacx antares and the rollers are great for steady continuous efforts or short high cadence sprints. I got mine around march when i was coming back from sickness and had a solid base done over the winter, i found the rollers really easy to hold a thresehold effort compared to the turbo but during the summer as i got much fitter i found it very hard to get a higher hr, persumably because of the less resistence but it didnt really matter because i could just go on the road. Personnaly i prefere them

These are pretty good. They are quiet and easy to move around. You can also get a Front fork holder for them if you want and a resistance unit if you need it.

Still more questions than answers :-D thanks for yer inputs though. Like I say would be keeping my trainer so for hard thresholds could stick to trainer. Have heard mixed reports on how well the rocker is but bottom line seems to be ya can't sprint:-) . More than likely will invest. I'm cat3 looking forvat least a2 licence by end of year and should come ok if training to plan but still I hear a lit of guys racing swearing by rollers due to the fear of dying from boredom
