Hi this has probably been asked a few times but here goes...I was buying a car from the UK 4 months ago and the VRT was 3650....just checked it today and its now 5200 for the exact model.
Anyone got any ideas why its so much of a difference and how likely is it to come down again?

    Thanks

Have you selected the exact same model with the same emissions?

    The v5 registration cert.

It will be on the car's V5 registration document, that is what Revenue will go by. Ask the seller for it.

The exact same thing happened me quite recently. I was expecting €3600 as stated on the revenue CRT calculator. When I presented the car they could not give me a figure and said someone would call me within a couple of days. They did with €5200. I was shocked and on holidays abroad at that stage. On return home I went in to pay and was shocked further with an additional penalty of €200 for been late. It was their fault as I was willing to pay on presentation of the car but they could not give me a figure. Sad old Ireland.

Common tale is that the more VRT queries there are on a particular model through the website they allegedly hike up the VRT rate.

They got that idea from ryanair :)

Does the OMSP go up so?

The lady in the Vrt office said I could appeal the penalty but said not to bother as I would not win.

Last time I saw the appeal stats I think the large majority of appeals were successful.

I don't think it's that difficult to appeal either.

I am not that pushed about the €200 but if I thought there was any chance of getting any of the difference between the actual amount and the revenue calculator amount then I would go for it. What do you think ?

    Thanks
