You need to use an aluminium wood primer before you put anything else on the door!

You can get external satinwood now so yes you can use it. I seen a Dulux leaflet with it advertised.

    ok

the door is already painted with 'sadolin extra'

i still gotta use wood primer?

Yes you need to use aluminum wood primer or the paint will blister off.

Sand down the Sadolin extra and clean the door down, make sure its free from dust and then apply the aluminium wood primer.

Then put on an undercoat of your choice to suit your top coat. Two or three coats of the finish coat would be required i'd say.

I'm not exactly sure. It says on the back of the internal satinwood that you don't need an undercoat but someone on here mentioned that you're better off with it. Sorry I cant advise you on that mate.

I think you'll struggle to get a good finish with satinwood unless you use an undercoat, if you skip the undercoat you may end up applying a second coat of satinwood anyway, especially where a strong colour change is required. In exterior work it's always a good idea to have a good paint system and this means using a primer, undercoat and finish coat. Undercoat has more body than a topcoat and this helps "fill" minor surface imperfections giving a perfect surface for the finish. I'm not a pro painter by any means but I always use undercoat, no matter how good the existing surface.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, I decided to get my front teak door painted, the painter has used a silver or aluminium type paint first but the finish coat keeps coming out in small blisters. It has been stripped back three times now and repainted. He says he has never seen this problem in his 20 years as a painter. What is going wrong??????

Painting this time of year is never great. Temperature are kinda low at this time of year and there is more moisture in the air so painting outside is never ideal. If you check the rear of any of the external paint tins they will suggest not to paint at certain temperatures. This could be your issue. Then again maybe not. Thats just my opinion, I'm sure other people have ideas/suggestions as well.

How long did he leave between coats?

Can you tell us what paint he used for each coat?

Sounds like he didn't give enough drying time between coats!

Tell him to use 2 coats of Zinsser coverstain tinted to the topcoat colour, drop of owatrol oil in it to help the flow.
