My Unemployment record

I started a college course today and had to get a receipt from the social welfare just to prove how long i'v been unemployed. I got a shock when the women said 'unemployed 3 years' Now I done fas courses and took advise from Obair but unfortuntely your still considered unemployed when attending those courses. I am also training with the dublin civil defence atm.

I was just wondering how much of an affect that time spent unemployed could have on my future prospects? I'm currently doing a plc security course and have a great reference from a previous employer. My goal is to either join the fire brigade or Gardai (in the next few years hopefully)

    Thanks .....

Although you've been technically unemployed for three years your CV isn't blank - any courses/volunteering/studying shows that you've been learning and using new skills and haven't been sitting around.

It's way more common now to have employment gaps on your CV, but what will make you stand out is the effort that you have put in to improving your circumstances.

Employers know the score OP, it's nothing noteworthy to have gaps these days

To say you were unemployed three years is both correct and incorrect.

But the main thing is you were keeping busy so put that Civil Defense work and the all the good courses you've done on the CV and it'll look good.

With a good CV you'll be getting interviews and you'll be asked to talk about those gaps so be ready to talk positively here.

Have a read of the emergency services forums on boards and they'll have info on campaigns for fire brigade or the guards. From what I read having voluntary experience is very important so your Civil Defense work will stand to you

Thanks lads, I'm sure at this point plenty of people have been unemployed for weeks, months or even years. The time really does creep up on you though.

The course i'm doing and my work with the civil defence should help me get involved with the emergency services in some way. I know competition for any job these days is fierce so I need to start bulding my cv and my qualifications.
