Brake Pad Wear Indicator - NCT Fail

    Hi,
The brake pad wear indicator is showing up on the dash, this happens occassionly so much than likely its a short in the circuit.

Plenty of wear left on each of the four corners but if the indicator is on during the NCT test will it fail? even if the performance of the brakes are fine?

    Thanks!

This is the NCT test sheet
    http://www.ncts.ie/NCT%20Manual%20Revise%20May%202012.pdf
It doesn't specify what you're asking so I'd say put it through, it'll prob just be an advisory as they can see there's material on the pad itself.

    Thanks for that.
Yes I looked at that document too and didnt find anything on the indicator.

In my experience these indicators are just a wire embedded in the nearside (passenger) front brake pads and when the abrasive of the pad wears down to a point it gets exposed and triggers the warning light, it breaks the circuit which indicates the light.

What I always do is cut the two wires going into the break pad and solder/join them together and tape them up against the loom. IMO there is far too much left on the pads for a light to be on and the light gets annoying. I know myself when they need changing.

    This should work for you.

Item 60 of the NCT manual doesn't agree with you.

Would the pad ware indicator not flag one of these?
Ensure the malfunction indicators for Airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Electronic Braking System (EBS) / Anti-Lock
Braking System (ABS) and Parking Brake malfunction indicator are in working order.

There are separate indicators for ABS and Parking brake so it should be ok.

If there was an 'etc' at the end of the sentence then it would be different story. I plan on finding the issue causing it anyway before the test.

    Thanks anyway.

The pad ware indicator being illuminated doesn't effect or relater to the operation of any of those systems.

I'll see how it goes, if it fails on only that I think I'd have a case to argue as there is no mention of it in the manual. If it fails on something else then I'll just take it on the chin!

i've had a vectra before where the brake pad wear indicator was on and it passed the NCT.

A brake pad wear indicator is not an indicator of brake failure, merely a service reminder, so technically should have no bearing on it's own.

It would only mean anything if a matching inspection of the pads founds the pads to be below - not at - service limits.

Of course the reverse is also true: i.e. if your indicator is NOT on and they physically inspect pads and see they are worn to an unacceptable standard you'll fall as well.

Unless I'm mistaken no Avensis has ever had an electronic wear indicator on them.

A lot of these things can depend on who is testing the car and what sort of humor they're in.
