Anyone know if there is currently a backlog process licence renewals?

My boss said he read an article in the Irish Times this weekend saying there was a backlog, but he cant find the article.

I had to renew my prov licence friday, after being an idiot and turning up for my test thurs and realising my licence was out of date.

They also had me renew my full motorbike licence, so that it would be updated to match the address on my prov licence.

So I've no licence for anything at the minute. Could do with a quick turnaround on this.

And can I drive legally with the receipts for these licences, while I wait for them to arrive in the post?

Yes, I renewed my licence a couple of months ago and there was a 4 week delay in getting to the processing of the application, so my application landed in the tax office and it took 4 weeks before they even got to opening it.

Same with me in Cork city. Four weeks and six days later I got my shiny new licence. Annoyingly though, I know it's not the same for every council. A friend in Mullingar got it done in less than a week for example!

I went through the same stress too. First rang local Garda station, the Gard didn't have a clue though as it was all a bit up in the air. Rang Traffic Corps then, was told there was no problem if licence is just away for renewal. :)

I was waiting 7 weeks on my licence a couple of months back. They said the delay was because they aren't processed in house anymore its a private company.

There's been a couple of threads on this. First of all, the licences have only started to be processed centrally from this month. So - if the local council told anyone that the delays were down to the contractors, then they are being a little economical with the truth!

It seems to depend on the LA as to how long it takes for a driving licence to be processed. Some have had them back in a week or less. The majority seems to be at least a month leadtime.

It is law that your licence should be on your person at all times; and that the licence must be produced when taking a car for an NCT; and that you have to send the old licence before the new one is issued. Taking all that into consideration, it's an absolute joke that you're left without an important document for weeks on end.

There have been some people needing to drive abroad, who've been on to the council with proof of travel and had the licences issued quickly. Are you able to do that, OP?

Thanks for the comprehensive info lads.
No, not immediately able to do that but could look intot it I guess.

I applied for the renewal at Clondalkin Motor Tax office, so South Dublin County Council I guess. Thats where I'm living anyway.

Problem was that when I handed in the application, they noticed that my new address doesnt match the one on my full motorbike licence, so I had to get that renewed and now have nothing while waiting. I dont have a bike right this minute but could be buying one as early as tomorrow, so could do with the licence so I can get the bike as soon as possible.
Heres hoping the process moves quicker than anticipated.
