Attic insulation advice

Hi, I'm living in a rental house and was hoping to put in some attic insulation for the winter. I want it removable if we ever move so spray is out. Getting the landlord to do it is also not an option as its family.

Do I just go for the thickest rolls i can afford. Is 100mm effective or false economy? Do the covered rolls perform better? Can they be squashed in under the roof at the edge or will that cause damp? Finally does anyone know where we can get a good deal at the moment?

    Thanks, I really don't have a clue!

What i have done is put 150mm in between the joists and then run another 150mm thickness across the joists.

    I'd agree with atilladehun.
Ideally your Landlord would do a permanent installation and improve the B.E.R. rating of their property.

In order to be able to remove it you might consider using Knaff, which comes in foil & plastic covering, so in theory it should be easier to remove.
I bought it in Homebase but its available in other stores too. Check out Woodies and B&Q also.

Rockwool is another alternative. Its not as irratating as fibre glass and is therefore easier to use / inatall. I'd imagine its easier to remove also. It is however more expensive that fibre glass.

Lots of advice on attic insulation over on the Construction forum.
Ensure you maintain a 50mm air vent gap between the felt and top of any insulation - its a building reg and prevents dry rot.

Any self respecting decent landlord would and should do this for their tennant/tennants.

The days of living in a house with no insulation are long gone.

Standards have risen and higher standards are expected by tennants who are handing over their rent each month.

    Dunno what is more weird.

The house that you rent from a family member that has no attic insulation (obvious implications with heat loss among other problems)

.....Or the fact that you seem to suggest that once done, you will take the insulation with you when you move out !

are you talking about Roof Insulation? doing the same thing at the moment myself.

you can get 8'x4' (sheets) doulble sided foil insulation by xtratherm. Cut them to the required widths. If your rafters are 5" deep then you can get 3" thick rigid insulation thats allowing 2" for air ciculation.

Priced them @ 35 approx per sheet this morning.
In my case i need 7 sheets, total price for insulation is 245, 245 seems a bit pricey so i am going to check about for better prices.

    got prices t.j.o'mahonys xtratherm 70mm 8'x4' (XT/PR or UF) sheets = 28.50

    Thanks folks,

Ah there's all sorts of complications involved with renting from family. There's the reduced rated but reduced complaints from us. Grey and ambiguous would be more correct.

I'll go with the roll out rock wool I think. Just have to decide on depth and if it work without taking the attic floor up.

If someone floored the attic area surely they would have done the insulation between joists!!!

I'd have to agree. Atic insulation isn't new, so surely the owner would of insulated before flooring the attic?

Anyway 200mm thick of Rockwool is going to make a huge improvement, especially if its totally uninsulated. Rockwool is less likely to compact over time, so its worth the investment.
