Whitewater's Copperhead ale is around 3.7 or 3.8% I think.

Fyne Ales Jarl is top-drawer, and at 3.8% you can enjoy a few without risk of a hangover.

Diageo seem to think so with their mid-strength stout but I don't think there really is at the moment. A lot of people want their money's worth and will also find or convince themselves that lower abv stuff doesn't taste the same.

Tesco in the north has a big selection of beers around the 2.8% mark, might pick up a pale ale tomorrow and try it out.

Adnams lighthouse 3.4% and adnams sole star 2.7% are both worth a try.

Both can be found in tesco in Ireland.

You could simply get a strong tasting beer and dilute it with fizzy water. Most of the big breweries are meant to brew to a high % and dilute down anyway.

Tesco value beer is very low %, haven't seen it lately though, probably muck.

Diageo and the UK brewers you mention that Tesco carry are doing it for the same reason: lower excise duty at 2.8% and below. Half the rate per litre in fact (sound familiar?). Newish rate in both countries.

BTW, Tesco in ROI also carry several UK 2.8% beers, Fullers Mighty Atom for example.
