The Currys PC World website is giving 100€ Cashback on any laptop or Macbook Pro over 599€ when claimed between 21 and 60 days after purchase. Good timing for students!

Apple themselves offer 10% off for students anyways.
And campus.ie offer 12% off if you can sign into your college network through them.

I inquired in Harvey Norman and they said they one match Apples student discount which as far as I know is about 10% and at the moment on their website it says they are also giving a 100 euro voucher.

Could they not just knock 100 of the price there and then? Having a 21 - 60 day window is a bit ridiculous. It just means hauling the student back into the shop in a months time so that they'll spend their new 100 euro on something else with them.

That was a fair question and didn't deserve your harsh tone. Now maybe you didn't intend to come over as condescending but I think you've strayed over that line. Especially since there's no link to the T & C's you speak of, either in the OP or your post.

When most of us say "social justice" we mean equality under the law opposition to prejudice, discrimination and equal opportunities for all. When Social Justice Activists say "social justice" they mean an emphasis on group identity over the rights of the individual, a rejection of social liberalism, and the assumption that unequal outcomes are always evidence of structural inequalities.

Don't most (all) Apple products have a fixed price?

So, if they say €100 cashback, it's likely that it's priced €100 more than it will be in 21 or whatever days elsewhere.

That aside, this was €599 yesterday (€449 after Cashback), it has to have been a misprice, but not an obvious one, (they probably included the cashback by accident.)

So, with the cashback it's €600 ish. It still seems like a very good price.

The cheapest i have seen it elsewhere is saveonlaptops and that works out at €652.

Wish i had the cash yesterday :D. (Still don't have it today :( )

    Yep.
But archives are still available if you want to check out their policies.

I was looking at a few laptops in Currys and most of them that I looked at that were eligible for this offer were out of stock in Blanchardstown. These included Acer and Samsung laptops. After checking stock on their system, no stores in Ireland had any in stock either.....this was a couple of weeks ago! It seems anything of interest, to me anyway, was overpriced or out of stock. Maybe I missed the boat, or maybe they have it set up so that when someone goes to buy one of these great deals, they are instead flogged a Toshiba Satellite (which they seem to have shed loads). There were a few people in there when I was browsing and nobody seemed to be able to get the laptop they wanted.

I got that Samsung above for €650 in Power City.

That wouldn't surprise me. I'm not a fan of Currys/PC World, and i was trying to find where the faults lay in this offer. Maybe it's that they don't have any to begin with...

    No. You are incorrect.
    See https://www.curryspcworldcashback.ie/
    Step 2 clearly states
    "Step 2
Wait 21 days after your purchase date with the day after purchase counting as day one. "
So yeah, what is it you are saying about posting?

Step 1 - buy the machine

Step 2 - wait 21 days from the date of purchase

step 3 - with voucher, go on-line, fill in form and submit voucher

step 4 - you either receive check or it is deposited in your acct.

You can return a purchase for any reason un-opened to PCW up to 21 days...hence the policy.

Beware of these cashback scams. I watched a consumer watchdog program about PC World/Currys a few weeks ago all about this and it didn't cast PC World in a particularly good light at all.

Some of the problems I can remember their customers encountering were: Having to claim part of the cashback from one company, the balance from another company, with different hoops to jump through at each stage, taking photos of receipts, photos of serial numbers, mandatory waiting periods for no reason etc. They're designed purely with so many awkward hoops so that they can benefit from the marketing/advertising caché with the supposedly discounted price but not have to fork out in the vast majority of cases. These schemes should be illegal imo.

There's a reason they don't just discount the price by that amount, which they would do instead of these cashback anti-consumer gimmicks if they were 100% genuine.

So what are you getting at. You are just proving my point?
You cant get the cashback for 21 days.
My comment was why not apply the cashback now, i.e. reduce the price by 100 euro and save the student the hassle of doing anything 21 days later.

I am always wary of these cashback things, in previous threads you have seen people having trouble getting it, or discovering the thing they got was not covered by it, with dubious misleading ads which of course usually legally cover themselves.

The other trick they used to use was giving "VAT back, 23%", taking advantage of peoples poor maths skills.

People know VAT is 23% and so many wrongly think its 23% off or will be getting a cheque for 23% back. e.g. get €230 on a €1000 laptop back. But really the laptop is €813 with vat of 23% is €187 =€1000 in total. So they only get €187 back.

I have no doubt whatsoever that the marketers knew many would be misled.

Ya that's the one. This cashback crap is massive in the states and I'd hate to see it creep in any more over here. There's a major problem with the whole idea of cashback schemes regardless of what company are exploiting them. The only reason they exist ultimately is to mislead the average consumer.

I read more about that on another forum.
It seems that Samsung offered £50 Cashback no matter where you bought a Samsung Tablet.

Fair enough. But why not just lower the price by £50? - Obvious reason is that People didn't always chase the cashback, they were happy with the full price.

Then, Currys upped the price by £40 and also offered a £30 cashback.
They saw the profit potential in it. The reason they weren't called up on the extra £40 rise, is apparently because they are allowed to sell products at their own profit in line with their expenses (rent, staff, electricity etc..), and they were offering £30 back. Nobody is monitoring that.
But when People were chasing their cashback, they were more likely to chase the £50 than the £30 when it became complicated, leaving Currys with the extra cash.

    Dirty, dirty tactics.

Not much good when everything of interest is out of stock :-)
