Missing tooth

    Hi all,

New to posting in this forum but not new to dental work.

Since I was young, I have had a number of procedures done. SAculping of teeth, retainers and braces etc. I was born without a tooth on the right side of my front teeth. I had a prosthetic tooth fitted next to my front tooth to cover this gap and prevent my teeth from moving.

Unfortunately, a year ago in uni, I has this prosthetic tooth knocked out and have suffered from a gap in my teeth since.

I am currently employed in a good job and wish to deal with this problem. My questions are as follows -

    a. How much approx would it cost to get a tooth fitted and in place
    b. Are there payment plans available or would I have to take a loan
    c. How invasive or painful would this procedure be

Any guidance would be appreciated. I'm passed the stage of running to mum and Dad for such matters but unfortunately find myself very clueless

It depends all on how you go about replacing the tooth. Your basic options are:
    1. Denture = cheap but uncomfortable and not good for your gums.
    2. Bridge = cannot be removed, looks good, requires some preparation to the adjacent teeth.
    3. Implant = Most like a tooth but most expensive.

A good dentist will be able to provide any of these treatments pain free. Costs will vary with options chosen.

Any indication or high-low estimates as to cost. Also, would there be the possibility of a payment plan?

Somewhere between 240 euro to 5000 euro depending on the dentist, the quality, the option chosen. I dont know what payment plans your dentist offers.

Thank you, but that was so vague

Well if you tell me which option you are suitable for, and which you want, whether you need bone grafting or gum grafting, what kind of temporary you need and what type of dentist your going to and their level of training, I can be more specific...sorry I am not being flippant, but the reality is you will need to see a dentist for the ins and outs. All you find on-line is low ball prices.

Since posting of the initial post I have saved some money. I am now going to start emailing dentists regarding same. This is the draft email -

    "Good morning,

I trust this finds you well.

I was born without the tooth to the immediate right of my two front teeth. I had worn braces for years and until recently had an prosthetic tooth, attached to the back of my front tooth, but this has since fallen out. This has left a gap.

My query is what options are available to me and what would the cost of said options be.

I would be obliged if you could please respond via email or call between 1 and 2 p.m

    Kind regards"

Could any dental professionals advise on possible amendments to make this clearer or advise on any aspects that I should take account of?

You'll have to forgive me, I'm rather ignorant of the dental area / industry.

    Thank you

Totally pointless, the dentist need to see you in person, have X-rays etc. choose a dentist and go for a consultation. The options are as I outlined in the second post. Cost will vary depending on the variables in post 6

I have 2 teeth missing beside each other and I had a bridge done. It cost around 600 I think, can't remember exactly as was 4 years ago. Am very happy with it. No pain involved at all.

We get emails like this all the time, generic response is, without first seeing the teeth/X-rays/space/occlusion/bone mass/condition of adjacent teeth, we are unable to give options nor prices. You are wasting your time.

And if you are going to send emails, do not send them through WhatClinic, most dentists regard emails from that site as spam.

Surely a prosthetic can be crafted to fit the gap and then attached to adjacent tooth.

I would like to avoid a protracted ordeal of a number of days of work for consultations, x-rays etc.

Can someone offer any guide on the price of a bridge?

I know this may seem tedious to some of you but unfortunately I have limited funds and knowledge. I'm hoping for a little guidance

Each person is different, each dental situation different. Most dental clinic websites have price guides, look them up but you will not get treatment options specific to your own case, because until you are examined a dentist will not know what treatment options will work for you.

You want the treatment, but don't want to pay for a consultation? The most important part of the treatment.

OP, unfortunately in healthcare it's only possible to provide an accurate treatment plan (incl costs) after having a clinical consultation.
Imagine needing a prosthesis for any other part of your body-leg, breast, hip, knee- then just randomly emailing around clinicians/surgeons, then proceeding straight into treatment. It would be considered by most to be very foolhardy.
Most dental surgerys offer early morn/late eve/lunchtime/weekend appointments, it'd involve half an hour of your time at most. This thread has probably taken up more of your time than a consultation would have ;)

OP do you not see value in having a consultation? Would you have treatment from somebody willing to give you a quote without even having examined you, and you assesed them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 294 ✭✭retroactive

Of course I would expect a consultation to be part of the process. I think it is the initial step in every profession. However, I'm a little bit suspicious at the evasiveness of the answers. The OP asked for a possible costs breakdown of getting an implant.

It seems in Hungry that it would cost a little under a €1000.

    What can I expect here?

Single tooth implant in Ireland about €2000-5000, depends on tooth space, available bone and gum and resulting need for gum and bone grafts. Extraction needed? What type of temporary is needed?
There are so many factors to consider here and that is why no one here can be exact with you as no one here has seen you......

    Implant:

Who do you want to do your implant, a dentist or someone with specialist training and qualification? What type of implant is going to be placed? Do you need a bone graft? What gingival bio type do you have above adjacent teeth? If you have never had a tooth there, will some treatment be necessary to improve gingival architecture prior to cosmetic phase? What type of abutment to you need, titanium or zirconium? What type of crown is going to be necessary? As the process can take up to four months, are you going to need a new temporary replacement to accurately maintain the space/adjacent tooth positions and prevent drift/tilt of teeth? Etc, etc. Price €2-5k depending on the answers to these questions.

    Bridge:

What condition are your adjacent teeth in? What is bone support like? Are the adjacent teeth now tilting toward each other making it more difficult to prepare them for a bridge? What shape is the ridge/gum where the tooth is missing? Can a replacement bridge tooth be made which will improve aesthetic? What type of bridge is needed? What gingival bio type do you have, will recession be likely if bridge margins are placed up under gingiva? What's your occlusion like? Etc, etc, etc Price €1-3k depending on answers.

The answers aren't evasive, price is case specific and if you could post the above details, you would probably get a more precise answer.

    I've booked a consultation.

    :)

Thank you all for your input. I feel now I can atleast ask more educated questions about my options and feel more informed.
