Garmin 500

Following a cycle yesterday, I connected the 500 to my laptop and nothing happened. The laptop would not pick up the signal from the unit, I changed the cable and same result so I know its neither the cable or the laptop. The Garmin seems to be working fine and it has all the details of the last cycles when you look it up on the unit and it is charging when you plug it in. The only thing I can think of is that I broke the the little blue cover on the back of the unit where you plug in the cable but would that cause the unit not to download (when I go into Strava and click on "upload activity" it says that there is no connection)
    Any suggetions ?

Happens sometimes, try right clicking on the USB icon in the toolbar and choose Eject USB device (if this appears as an option).

When it happens to me, it generally clears up after disconnecting/reconnecting the Edge500. Its probably also worth restarting your PC - but dont leaeve the Edge connected while you do so. Its possible that the PC will pick up the Edge after a restart.

Also, make sure you Edge has the latest firmware installed (you'll need to have Webupdater) and that your PC has the latest USB drivers......

It sounds like a Computer problem, the garmin should display the usual computer icon thingy when cable is connected, if it doesent it could be a Garmin issue. If problem persists then try another laptop/computer

Have a big cycle coming up next weekend, is it possible to borrow a 500 and download it to my own laptop after the event ?

Happens to me sometimes too! Disconnecting/reconnecting (a few times!) always works for me.

Have tried that but no success and have contacted Garmin by email this morning. Is it ok to use someone else's for a cycle ?

Maybe worth trying to reset Garmin. I think it's both left buttons + 1 on the right (top or bottom) held together for few seconds. That rubber cover is not a great design, so if you had a couple of wet sessions, maybe it got moisture and corrosion. Charge pins are usually a tad longer than the data pins in the socket, possibly worth to spray with contact cleaner or carefully brush a bit with small grit sand paper...

Judging from others on the forum, Garmin support seems to be hassle free to replace the unit.

I get this from time to time. As mentioned above, connecting into another USB port or disconnecting/reconnecting can sometimes work. You might try to start the PC and only when its fully up and running, connect in the garmin. Otherwise....

1 - When you connect the garmin to the computer via the USB does it begin to charge?

If yes, then it may that the computer hasn't picked up the device. Assuming its a windows PC then you might try opening up explorer and refreshing the view or getting the PC to manually search for hardward with Device Manager.

If no, it would appear that there is something physically wrong with one of (i) the USB port, (ii) the USB cable or (iii) the garmin itself.

Yes, no problem using another unit and uploading to your profile.
