Possibly a bad cell in the battery but mire likely a dodgy starter motor. Simple options anyway.

It's started now which is good as we have to go out maybe just a loose connection, will have a proper look when we home.

What year and engine? Friends have a 2009 1.8 TDCi and had similar trouble recently. Took ages to get sorted. Think it was injectors in the end; will check.

It could be a sticky solenoid in the starter.

The intermittent starting hinted to me at a fault with the starter. It could have been anywhere along the circuit though. Do you do the hammer tap test on the starter? Glad you got it sorted and thanks for letting us know :).

I took off the starter and then the solenoid and the solenoid fell apart in my hands so i ordered a new one of ebay coming from mayo which said order before 4pm for dispatch that day, that was 3 days ago and still not here:rolleyes: so i went to scrappy yesterday and got starter motor and was just going to stick that in but got home to find that one not working as the wire from solenoid to motor was broke,so took the solenoid off that and hoped for the best and it started to work, hopefully lasts.
