Poetry for an "older" 7-year old

I have a seven year-old son who has been described by his teacher as being an exceptional reader. He has read all of Roald Dahl's (children's) books and is on book 6 of the Narnia series and has Lemony Snicket lined up (don't know if these are particularly advanced for this age).

He's a bit facinated with rhyming words at the moment so I thought he might appreciate a book of poetry.

I suppose I could just pick something from the young teenager section but there really isn't much there. Anyone have any suggestions for something suitable?

Ted Hughes wrote a number of poetry collections for children, such as 'Season Songs', 'Meet My Folks', 'Moon Whales' and others.

There is an Irish website which specialises in children`s books they have a Poetry section, there is a book there called 100 Best Poems for Children, this might be worth checking out, its lovekidsbooks.com, its a book with a selection of contemporary and classic poems all chosen by children.

Check out Edward Lear as well (he of the "Owl and the pussycat" fame)

Most of his stuff is out of copyright.

http://archive.org/stream/nonsensebooks01leargoog#page/n364/mode/2up - on this one, look at page 366 onwards in particular.

You can get the full PDF/Epub/Kindle from here: http://archive.org/details/nonsensebooks01leargoog (free)

I've just ordered this for my 4th class. Some of the poems may be a little difficult but he'll be doing well to get through it all.

There are 520 pages of poems. Not bad for around €7.

I would recommend the book Cloud Busting. It is a lovely story told actually in verse, but hits on many different types of poems.

I think he would really enjoy it.

    Check it out on amazon
