Parking in Dublin on street parking which is free overnight and all day Sunday.

Something on the meter said about paying for 3 hours after 8pm.

Do I need to fill the meter or what's that about?

For example if you park on Stephens green after 1900 its free until 0659.
If you have the car moved by 0700 you won't get clamped.
If you don't think you will you can prepay for the first 3 hours until 10.

You're prepaying tonight for the first 3 hours tomorrow.

+1 In areas where pay parking does not apply for all 24 hours of the day, if you put money into the meter during a period when parking is free, the meter will give you a ticket which starts at the next pay parking period. This as a previous poster has said allows you to prepay for a period of up to three hours on the following day.

Or pay nothing but you have to get back to the car early in the morning to move it or risk getting clamped.
