Problem with XBMC and network

Having a strange problem with OpenElec on an Intel NUC. Have had it running fine for weeks. Then this morning I just cannot connect to it from my laptop. I can't play any of the files on my laptop with the samba shares I set up.

I can't get access with SFTP or Putty either. But the funny thing is that the OpenElec box can access internet services like RSS and Youtube etc. It's just that it doesn't seem to be registering on my home network.

I'm far from a networking genius so I'd be grateful for any help. I should also add I updated Avast this morning and I accidentally installed a load of crap (firewall etc) because of tiny imperceptible tick boxes. I've uninstalled them now though.

I'm with Eircom and have one of their fibre modems. Interestingly in the "assign static DHCP" area the OpenElec machine option isn't there in the dropdown box. HELP! :)

I was going to suggest NFS shares instead of SMB but if you can't even SSH into it, it must be something more serious. Can you even ping it?

  • Yup I can ping it.

:Edit: That's strange I can't ping it either! Could have sworn it worked earlier.

  • If I ping from the command prompt I get nothing. If I go to the Diagnostics area of my modem settings it pings fine!!!

Do you have another computer on your network you can try from? Or failing that a linux live OS.

It might just be your Windows network settings, whatever firewall you installed may have changed something.

  • Thanks for your time mate. I hooked up my old xbox with a different ethernet cable to the modem, enabled the xbmc http server on that and tried to access it from my Android phone (over wifi) and it couldn't reach it either.

I enabled the http server on XBMC for Windows on my laptop and could connect to it using my Android phone. The laptop is connecting wirelessly.

It seems to be only affecting wired connections....sounds ridiculous I know. Doesn't make any sense. I keep thinking I've done something and forgotten to disable it! I've been at it all day now and I'm starting to get confused.

Think I just need a night's sleep at this stage and the answer might come to me.

When you say that two wireless devices can connect to each other, but your wireless devices cannot connect to your wired network then it sounds to me like your modem may not be bridging between your wired and wireless LANs correctly and might need a reboot. You don't say if two or more wired devices can communicate with each other or not, but as you say the modem can ping them directly then chances are they can.

Reboot your modem, and if that doesn't work there are a number of other scenarios I can think of that might cause your problem, but I'd start with a reboot of your modem and take it from there.

  • You're bang on mate! I just came here after I tried connecting my laptop to the modem with another ethernet cable and it's all working fine and dandy.

It does seem to be a problem with wireless devices and wired devices not connecting. Reboot the modem? Bloody hell mate I must have done it about twenty times today.

Please do tell what the other scenarios are my friend! :)

Hmm, it looks like the scenario was right, but the solution is wrong. 9 times out of 10 a reboot will fix it, but if it hasn't then it's either a config issue or a hardware issue.

First thing I'd do is check the config on the modem if possible. I'm not familiar in any way with these modems so I can't guide you much here, but look out for anything that says 'AP Isolation' or similar and make sure it's unticked. Depending on how brave you are you might want to try a reset of the box and set it up again from scratch. Failing that I'd be inclined to ring eircom, it's their kit they should be able to explain why your wired and wireless LANs can't communicate with each other.

If I were to guess at another scenario then I'd have to ask are you sure your wireless clients are not connecting to another access point? You're on the new fiber network so you'll have to have gotten a new modem recently, the old one isn't powered on somewhere is it? Or you're not connected to a neighbors wireless somehow, or did you have a dedicated access point that might still be lurking somewhere? It's a stretch I know, but it might be no harm to power off the modem and see if you still have a wireless signal.

For this kind of query it might be no harm asking in the broadband forum. From what you've said it doesn't look like an issue with openelec and folks there might have come across this issue before or might at least have some experience with your particular modem to help guide you.

Did you try a factory reset of the modem? Also, I was curious about efibre and found that they have a surprisingly good manual here which explains the different settings:
http://broadbandsupport.eircom.net/download/zyxel/eircom_D1000.pdf I assume that's the modem they gave you?

Check out the BSS and port isolation sections although I doubt that you would have changed anything there but a factory reset of the modem would revert anything that you might have changed yourself either way. You can take a backup of the settings to your PC from the router web interface if you are nervous about resetting it.

  • Don't see why I would need to do a factory reset. I didn't change any of the settings and surely Avast couldn't have accessed it (although it is a massive coincidence that things have gone pear shaped since it installed its "internet security" crap).

Jumbobreakfast is right, sometimes what's being reported in the GUI is not what is being applied in the underlying config. It could be down to buggy software, or parts of the config that are hidden from the user that have been applied. Often the best way to fix this is with a factory reset.

It doesn't necessarily need to be anything to do with Avast, as you say this is probably just a coincidence.

  • Bugger it...factory reset did nothing. :(

I have a similar problem to OP and hope somebody can offer some suggestions.

Running XBMC on a Raspberry Pi for weeks without an issue and using the official xbmc remote on an iPhone 4. Using Ethernet on the PI to stream stuff from a Linux pc. Using Eircom eFiber broadband.

The iPhone remote suddenly stopped working and despite rebooting the router and reinstalling the app could not get it to work again. Now using a keybord on the Pi. I tried another app for the Apple store but no go, apps cannot find XbMC . I installed xbmc on the linux machine but I would not work on this also.

I can login to the Pi over the wired network fine, but if I try to do the same from a laptop on the wireless network it will not work. If I plugin the laptop to the network I can and get to the XBMC interface using the IP address.

It seems to be some issue with the wireless setting on the router but I cannot see what might be causing it!

    Worked!

Thank you so much. Was pulling my hair out with this.
