Have a 2009 1.6 tdci focus for 3 years now with 70k km on the clock. Just wounding have the turbo problems been removed from the pre 08 models? And if not when should I be expecting problems?

Isn't that the problem with the pipes that feed the oil to the turbo getting clogged? If it is, I believe if you flush them out ever 20k or so (don't know the exact amount of mileage) you shouldn't have much problems.

Ah! Here is a thread that I was grabbing my info from: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=68624244

Seems like its if you put the wrong oil in it, that's where the problems come in.

Will sticking to the service intervals do? I always do it before its due but only by a couple hundred. It's in getting services today

I'm sure if you stick to the service intervals and give the turbo time to wind down when you're finished driving it as well as make sure the oil is changed with the correct oil... You should be fine! I'm welcome to somebody with experience of this engine correcting me, however.

I got a tddi but I was looking to buy a 1.6 tdci 05 but I was told to stay away from them as they are the peugeot/ citreon engine but he did say the engine and turbo was sorted from 07 so you should be ok

If your worried drop the interval to 10 or 15k km. I service my one every 10k km or maybe a small bit more. Although I service it myself so it doesn't cost me that much. Always use 5w30 fully synthetic oil. There is 120k km on mine on an original turbo 2007. I personally wouldn't leave my one till 20k km to be serviced too long IMO.

20k is crazy to leave for service, I always do mine every 10k max, I don't know why manufactures say 20k,they probably do hoping over time you will pop your turbo etc so you bring it back to main dealer and get charged loads €€€€€

The 1.6 is a very well proven reliable engine as its used and STILL used in Citroens, Peugeots, Fords, Volvos, Suzukis and Minis!

Its biggest fault is that it is not tolerant of neglect and MUST be serviced as per schedule with the correct oil.

As above, these are a very reliable engine if properly maintained.

OP, if you are worried and want to take preventative action then you could get the sump removed and cleaned out, the oil pump pickup pipe replaced and also the turbo oil feed line and fittings, in particular the banjo bolt which attaches the turbo oil feed line to the engine block. Then make sure the oil and filter are changed every 15,000km with a top quality 5w30 fully synthetic oil.

The reason for doing this is to ensure the turbo gets an adequate oil supply. Lack of oil to the turbo due to sludge buildup inside the engine is the usual cause of failure with them.

in work we have an 09 partner with 100km, serviced every 20k km and its the biggest heap of s#@t we ever got,it goes through tyres like they were going out of fashion and we had to change diesel pump and fuse box. I got a 10 berlingo and its heading down same road. Stay away from French motors is my advice

I think the interval has officially be brought back to 15k not 20.

Not a fan of the engine myself but if you do 15k services you'll be fine.

i've read in places that in 07/08 they changed the engine bay layout to prevent the problem but was still concerned. Love the car to bits and don't want to switch it. the service interval is 15k i think, well that what i've been doing. Ive been warned by the mechanic everytime i bring it in to be careful with the engine its awful prone to problems if at all neglected. Cheers for the help. Ill be keeping it for a while now then. Fingers crossed it sees me through college!

Off topic but the motor for the windscreen washer just went and looking for a cheap new or good second hand one any ideas where i could pick one up?

Keep it well serviced. Drive it easy while its heating up and if you really want to go all out leave it idle for a few seconds before switching it off. All that will helps. After that there's no real point in worrying about it. My one had my heart broken and I just gave up worrying about it at this stage I keep it well serviced and when something goes wrong ill deal with it then pointless trying to worry about problems before they happen.

But I understand you were just getting info and if you keep minding the car as well as you do you should have no problems.

never really gets thrashed around. I do mainly motorway driving with the odd cross country trip on roads where the only thing its ever safe to pass out are cyclists and tractors. When I was searching, only ever found problems with the models before 08 but stil had concerns about mine
