I was doing a fetac level 5 last year prior to the first of january 2013. I finished that course in may and i got offered a level 8 degree through the cao. I had to fill out a new application form for the BTEA because its a new course im doing! My question is will i be classed as a new entrant that will only qualify to get a age related allowance €160 or will i get the same rate €188 as i was getting before! I rang the BTEA office and 2 differnt people gave me two differnt answers!!!!!!

I'm not sure. I think it's arguable that you are not a "new applicant"

What I would suggest is contacting your local TD and ask them to ask a parliamentary question of the minister to clarify it.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

It all depends on whether or not you're a new applicant. If your current BTEA is a continuation from last year you should see no change in payment. If you filled out a brand new application for a new course however you may yourself cut to €160.

Dont get too worried, i rang the btea office and they told me that i will be getting 188 because im not a NEW applicant. Even though your changing college the btea is all about progression so once you have progressed to a higher level this term you should still get 188... Fingers crossed, let me know what your rate is when it comes through

You are entitled to claim rent allowance on btra so that should help
