    Hello all,

I'm a teacher who registered for tax due to grinds/translations. Currently trying to do a tax return before the end of October. I'm reading the website and it says what is and isn't admissable as a company expense.

For example - I am thinking of buying an iPad for use in my teaching and to do translations on. I don't want to buy it only for the tax man to say it isnt' allowed.
Also, I'm a teacher (and part-time student) and if I buy it in the education store I can get free Apps. Is it possible to claim tax on something bought as a teacher/student for use an a self-employed person??

Also, I bought an air-purifier for the office as it's musty. Is that a work expense? I've heard of people using dinners and lunches as work expenses. I'm getting all my info second hand rather than from a proper source.

Also, does anyone have any suggested reading for someone who is cracking up due to all this tax stuff? I'm guessing an accountant would be way more than I'd even earn. I make about €1000/year on transtations and currently making €30/week in grinds!

You are not self employed so you are not entitled to expenses.

There is a link in my Sig or stickies on self employed income and expenses

As an employee, you are entitled to tax relief for expenses "wholly, exclusively and necessarily" incurred in performing your duties as an employee. most employees are reimbursed for such expenses and rarely have a basis to claim tax reluef. As a teacher, the Revenue will allow you flat rate expenses from the lst below.

    Teachers
Teachers [excluding guidance counsellors, third-level academic staff and physical education teachers]

    School principals 608 608 608 608 608 608
    Other teachers 518 518 518 518 518 518
    Part-time teacher (on full hours) 518 518 518 518 518 518
    Part-time (not on full hours) 279 279 279 279 279 279
    Guidance Counsellors
    (a) employed full-time in second level schools 518 518 518 518 518 518
    (b) engaged mainly in teaching general subjects but also doing part-time guidance counselling (additional allowance)
    126 126 126 126 126 126

    Physical education teachers
    (a) fully engaged in teaching P.E. 518 518 518 518 518 518
    (b) engaged mainly in teaching general subjects but also doing part-time P.E. (additional allowance)
    126 126 126 126 126 126

If you are undertaking the translations and grinds on a self employed basis and not through a company, you are entitled to relief for expenses "wholly and exclusively" expended in the course of your business. I can see papers, pens etc reasonable extent being deductibl plus some apportioned costs for your office if this is a workspace. You may also be entitled to tax relief for iPads etc but as a apital allowance over a number of years. In each case you need to be concerned over private (ie non business) use of these items which will restrict relief.

An iPad is a minor expense, its a low ticket item. There's no reason to spread something like that over several years.

I wasn't aware that there was a monetary limit to the capital v revenue distinction. Can you point me to the relevant guidance? In the particular circumstances, it would of course amount to 20% of his gross receipts for the year.
