Does anyone know why this was brought in and when?

I would greatly appreciate the answer to these questions as a friend of mine told me a story about how it came about and I was very surprised.

I loved the hugely sound declaration that until an egg hatches, a partially developed chick inside it is a fish, just incase yoiu are halfway through an egg on a friday and find a passenger......

    just shadows

Col 2:16-17 "Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ"

Hi Finnbar, in Catholic teaching any form of 'fasting' is a way of introducing ascetism into our lives - it's a way of being introspective about our own faults and failings, and a time to contemplate what we are putting first in our lives above God - because we as Christians must always remember that everything comes from God. So, for instance this is not to say that any food or drink is bad no...this is a form of dualism and is a heresy. Everything is 'good' every pleasure we partake in is 'good' - we know this from the Creation narative.

So, for instance, and I hope this is understandable. We have in Scripture the story of the fall etc. and we know what 'sin' is....

In Catholic teaching there are seven 'deadly' sins that will lead a person to a form of idolotary, because the opposit to faith in God for all things, depending on him in all things, is a restlessness of heart that can lead to very many idols. The seven sins here listed are a way of introspection and checking ourselves to make sure we are in fact truly putting God first and following the narrow path through this wilderness in life that Jesus taught us, and following the Good Shepherd.

They are..listed from the very worst to the least harmful (according to Dante anyways..lol)

Pride -- Is combated by the practice of humility
Envy -- Is combated by the practice of admiration
    Anger -- By Forgiveness
Sloth -- By zeal for the mission
    Avarice -- By generosity
    Gluttony -- By Ascetism
Lust -- By profound respect for the other.

It is for freedom that Christ set us free - If we are 'bound' to one, all or many of these, and practice them than we aren't really taking part in lifting up our Cross for Christ. Indeed, we are also not involved in the battle to remove the massive planks we have in our own eye in order to see correctly.

    Hope that helps.

OT but as I was watching tv last night this thought struck me. All the advertisements payed to the 7 deadly sins in one way or another. Bill Hicks was right!
    Bill on marketing and advertising;
You are Satan's spawn filling the world with bile and garbage.
