Buying a new PS3 vs second hand?

I have an old PS3 that keeps YLODing and it's getting more frequent. I fix it myself, it's easy but a pain in the arse nonetheless. Am I better off buying new or would a secondhand PS3 be worth the trouble? I only want it for Skyrim and GTA V.

Did Sony get rid of the YLOD problem in a certain year or do all PS3s have YLOD potential?

I have only ever had Slim PS3's and i have never had a problem with one. Was your's a Phat? Older ones seem to be the ones for trouble.

My advice is don't go second-hand off adverts or done deal. You'll never know if it'll break in 2 hours/2 weeks/ 2 months.

If you buy second hand from gamestop they at least offer you a 1 year guarantee with it. Maybe other retailers offer the same guarantee.

Yeah, it's a fat one, got it off someone else 2 years ago and it was probably 4 years old by then. Good idea about buying SH from a shop, thanks.

I went out and bought a Slim. Much better, especially since the old one would probably YLOD on the GTA V opening screen.
