Hey, I have my interview for hibernia on Monday. I've been looking at the old threads here but I'm just getting more and more overwhelmed. Is there anyone can help as regards what kind of questions they ask for the Irish part of the interview? I've the basics covered like my past times, work experience, college, school, my family etc etc. but I'm nervous about whether they will ask me serious questions about why I want to teach or what would make me a good teacher. Anyone with any advice or help would be appreciated! Thanks

    Hi Niamh,
First of all RELAX! I did the interview a few weeks ago and and got offered the course the next day. They were very nice people. I totally over prepared for the interview with the serious questions and I ended up getting flustered when they asked what i was going to do tomorrow!
They asked me about myself, my family, what i'd done since the leaving cert and then asked very obvious past tense, future tense and modh coinn questions. So just make sure you can answer these 3questions What did you do yesterday (from the time you got up til you went to bed), What would you do if you won the lotto? (have at least5examples) and What will you do tomorrow? Then just relax and let them guide you through it. They don't want to catch you out. I don't know how much they change the people interviewing or the questions they ask but I got the impression it was pretty scripted. Good luck!

Hey, I did my interview last monday and got an email Thursday saying I got my place. Its usually 2 weeks after you apply that you get the date for the interview.

Hi Niamh, thanks for the reply. 2 weeks, that's pretty quick. haven't done Irish in quite some time, is 2 weeks enough time? or should i practice/relearn my Irish and then apply? also, on the application itself, there's a section about 'teaching experience', i haven't volunteered in a school or anything like that....was that section brought up in your interview? and do u reckon me not having done any might go against me?

    Just a few questions there...Haha

I hadnt been doing any observations or anything but I had been in a few schools teaching irish dancing so I had a good idea of the school set up. One of the schools I was in was a gaelscoil so I had to teach in irish. However, I quickly learnt the phrases I needed and was able to get by. I went to 3 private grind classes to practice the gaeilge. I don't think it will have any affect on your application if you haven't been in a school. The irish section was grand. He asked me about myself and where I live, the facilities in my area. He asked me about the cinema and what type of films so I just talked about one I had seen recently. Asked about irish dancing and sean nos dancing because im involved in it. Also asked what kind of work I did in the salon I used to work in and what kind of hair I liked to work with. Asked what I would do if I had money (modh conn) asked what I will do for xmas. What will I do after the interview. That was pretty much it for the irish part. The English interview asked me what I knew about hibernia college and the course, what my ideal school would be or what maintains a good balance in aschool. How I deal with people and communicate. My knowledge of the net and computers. The broadband I use at home if its suitable for the course! The importance of computers in a classroom and how teachers rely on them. I had prepared completely different questions to what I was asked because they seemed to be the questions popping up everywhere but all I would say is just be able to talk about your application form really. I hope that makes sense. As for the irish, I looked up the gaeltaca website and gave them a ribg because she was able to recommend a website for verbs etc. I cant think of the site offhand but think ive it written down somewhere. If I find it ill send it on

Thanks Niamh, plenty of food for thought in your post and you do make it sound very doable. if i apply shortly, i may get an interview before Christmas and not have it hanging over me through Christmas. :)
