Temporary Van Insurance?

    Hi,

I need temporary (comprehensive) van insurance for a SWB Transit that I'm renting over the weekend for two days. I've done this a couple of times before and transferred my insurance, no problem. However, I'm with No Nonsense now and they've just told me that they don't insure vans, period! So I'll talk to the van rental company in the morning and check whether they can do anything for me but any suggestions here would be welcome also. I did some googling and there appear to be one or two places in the UK that do this short-term van insurance gig but nothing that I could see in Ireland.

    Thanks,
    super_freddie.

    Cars usually yes.
Van's quite often are rented by f.e. small garages which don't provide insurance, so you need to arrange it yourself.

I'm renting from a specialist van rental company who specify on their website and when I spoke to them about transferring your own insurance. No insurance organised by default, need to find out tomorrow if they can provide it as an extra. But as of now, they're not offering it, so want to see is there are any other options.

    Thanks,

To be honest, no nonsense's stance is pretty standard, there is a massive difference between the liability on car insurance and van insurance and I've yet to come across ANY insurer that would allow you to insure a van on a temporary basis on your private motor policy and vice versa.

    To the problem at hand.

Only real option is to find a van rental company that offer insurance ad part of the rental fee.

As discussed, rented a van twice in the past, 2011 and 2012, and on both occasions, no issue transferring the insurance. Don't have the documents as to what insurer I was with then but it wasn't No Nonsense :) Doesn't look like there's a silver bullet, will just have to see what van rental company say in the morning.

    Thanks,

These days the car rental companies does provide the insurance policy too.Generally speaking, if you own a car and have insurance, that policy extends to your rental car. Many credit card companies also offer car insurance that covers rentals.
If you own an older car, the amount of damage your insurance policy offers might not be enough to pay for damages to a sparkling new rental.
If you do buy rental insurance, focus on two types of coverage: loss damage waiver and liability insurance. A loss damage waiver protects consumers if the rental car is damaged or stolen and can cover your regular insurance policy's deductible.
Supplemental liability insurance can provide additional coverage to your existing insurance policy if your policy has low liability limits.
And by all means, when you go to rent the car, walk around the vehicle with an agent to note any existing damage. The last thing you want is to be charged for someone else's accident.
