Looking for some new road shoes, have some entry level Shimano R87 and looking to get something, stiffer, lighter and more comfortable and good arch/foot support.

As i'm a North County Gent money is no object so recommend what you think is the best. Also I may throw a pair at the butler to follow me on domestique duty so any recomendations of a pair for around €150 as well please.

You NCD heads have all the nice bikes.

I'd probably say Bont Riots for that price. Or maybe those Fizik R3s in a colour that isn't red.

Right so then- it will have to be Rocket 7 starting at $1,450 (excluding casting fees). :P

The best shoe, like the best saddle, is the one you find most comfortable.

For me, Specialized. That's after using SIDI and Mavic. I wouldn't buy anything else now.

Stiff, light...these things don't matter much if the shoe doesn't feel that comfortable to begin with.

Yeah seriously considered these with the offer on Planet X but they just look too much like golf or bowling shoes. Maybe there nicer on the flesh.

Another vote for Specialized here, have also used Northwave. Mine are Specialized Pro RD, and since I got them they've been my single favourite bit of kit I've ever had (also my most lavish spend)

Heresy! They are a stunning shoe!

They do look better in the flesh the images on the Planet x site really doesn't do them justice. Google them for some better pics. If you're lucky that they still have your size I'd say get them even if you have to pay extra for the white ones to get your size.

They do size big though go with your normal shoes size I went with 43s and wear between 42-43 in normal shoes. Would probably have been ok with 42.5 hard to be sure though as my left foot is half a size bigger than the right. I find them to be very comfortable. Should have ordered the two sizes and sent back the odd pairs:D

Shoes fit can vary a lot between individuals though I've specialized shoes that I don't find that comfortable and others rave about them.
I figured at the price the Fiziks were worth taking the chance on.

they are much nicer in the flesh and they are a 300 quid pair of shoes for 70 quid ask your better half what that means and tell her they are red she will tell you what to do

I really hate this forum. Can't look at it without wanting to spend money. They have a pair of the red Fiziks in stock in my size too...

I can verify the red fiziks are fast, in fact so fast they are saving me a fortune on EPO.

Is the general concensus on the Fizik to go half a size smaller than your shoe size?

I'd say go with your shoe size I'm closest to an 8.5uk 42.5Eur in normal shoes and runners but as most of the time you can't get half sizes I wear an 8 or 9 depending on the fit of the shoe. I wear a pair of size 45 Pearl Izumis cycling shoes though that are a perfect fit for me! You probably would be ok with half a size smaller in the Fiziks the toe box is very roomy.

Hmm. I'm a 46 in normal shoes, 47 in my Shimano shoes, but they only have a 45 in stock on Planet X.

    To risk it or not....

They have a better range of sizes in the white they're nice but the red are awesome and a lot cheaper. I'd probably be like the ugly step sisters and try squeezing my foot in to the smaller pair to get the red ones.

I bought the Sliver SL from Planet X for £69 and they are a great shoe, first and only pair I have owned but great :)

Think the 45 would be a bit on the small side, if they had a 45.5 I probably would have bit the bullet and taken a chance.

Now this could be an option, 45.5 and a 46 in stock...

Lads I don't even have road pedals or a road bike in fact, you all have me looking at these for the fixed gear just because they look pretty.

Yea they're a bad influence around here used to be perfectly happy with my lidl and aldi socks and gloves but I'm after getting a good few castelli accessories delivered this week. If you had told me three years ago I'd spend nearly a tenner on a pair of socks and thought they were a bargain I'd have said you were mad.

Im a 45 in shimano so bought 45 in the Fiziks. The Fizuks are a gnats hair longer, but it didn't cause a problem.

I chose according to the EU size. The fizik 45 are sized (on the tongue of the shoe) as a uk 11 and a US 11 which I do not think is correct. I conclude from this they are accurately sized by reference to the EU sizing scale and Fizik try to translate this to the nearest UK and US sizing, given the half sizing they must have overlapped sizing somewhere else in the range.

Bottom line go with EU sizing.

I only bought a new set of Shimano M088s about a month ago, and changed out my SPDs for Time Atacs.

But these just look so pretty.....

+1 on specialized...have had a pair of s-works shoes for about a year now, easily the most comfortable shoe I've ever used from a cycling perspective

How do you find using the Time Atacs?

@OP I'm using Bonts extra wide shoes. Love them. 400 quid though, felt bad when i spent that much, felt good when I put them on though. And its hard to find shows that fit my duck feet.

Finding them great, using a set of Roc X2s, much better than the SPDs I had. Feel much more secure when clipped in, even when the SPDs were at full tension.

Only complaint is because the cleats are brass they wear easily. You generally have to replace them once a year. But still worth it.

Planet-X are out of stock of 45.5, but I know someone selling a pair, brand new in box and unworn, over on the adverts forum. [/shameless plug]

These will soon be sent back to Planet X, so act fast if you're interested!

I don't like the shape of the toe on Specialized (expert shoe or something like that. Same as DirkVoodoo), too round or in some cases too boxy. Mind you the ones I have are quite comfortable.

I have a few cheaper Sidi and they are all comfortable. This Sidi Zephyr road shoe and this Sidi Eagle MTB shoe.

My main road shoe is DMT Prisma. It's very light and very stiff. It took quite some time to break them in but I really like them now.

I've also had a pair of Northwave Aerlite 5 SBS. They were quite comfortable and a wider fit.

My first pair of shoes were some Diadora/Cannondale shoe (but in white, obviously). It's been so long since I've worn them that I can't remember much about it.

Last chance for these - they'll be sent back this week if no-one snaps them up.
