Not sure if I am the only one here doing it, but i put this up anyhow.

Any advice or tips for this would be great, especially around the start area, what should we bring etc.

Warm and comfy clothes and be prepared for a long wait!

It's a tough course but the crowds will inspire you. In any marathon you will need to save something for the last 6mile and New York is especially tough in that last few miles. Hopefully the weather will be kind. Have done it twice (2003 & 2005) and it was sweltering hot with savage humidity. 2004 I think was as cold as it gets with people taken off the course with exposure. You will know before you travel what it is going to be like , so prepare accordingly and adjust time goals if it is going to be warm . As the prev post says the wait at the start can be long and boring but you can get a spot to lie down and relax , and there is a zillion loos. And the atmosphere is great out there at the start. All in all though you won't forget this marathon so enjoy every second of it. There is always at least 500 Irish doing it so u won't be alone

How does the course compare to the Dublin Marathon?

    Same distance.:P

New York is not easy but it's pretty fair all the same. A perfect course to just enjoy rather than race, but if you are racing then be prepared for quite an amount of congestion and some hilly bridges. PVincent referred to the last few miles being tough. There is one drag along 5th Ave til you enter Central Park that looks like nothing on a normal day but you will feel it at mile 23 or so. It's probably a little tougher than Dublin but the huge crowds more than make up for the tad extra misery! My favourite part was through Brooklyn with the straight road (4th Ave) for about 5 miles ahead and the crowd about 10 people deep with music at nearly ever intersection. Just try keeping yourself from smiling & 'hi-five'ing!

The other thing to bear in mind in NY is that the surface is predominantly hard concrete so it does add to the toll on the body. As Belcarra says tho' it's one to enjoy. Don't plan on a big PB. If its your first just plan on soaking up the atmosphere. Not so sure about the sense in hi-fives all the way. I think that is draining on the energy levels. Every now and again for a lift is fine. The roads in Ny are very wide so if you can , learn the course so that you can stay the correct side to limit the extra yards you run around corners etc.

There are a couple of tough sections in New York. The first 16 or so miles are very flat and easy, so its possible that you'll be cruising along nicely up until that point. However, the ascent and descent of the Queensboro bridge are a tough section at around 17/18 miles. When you get off the bridge, the noise from the crowd will give you a huge boost, but be careful not to get carried away, because it is a very very long run the whole way up 2nd Ave (I think). The dead industrial areas in the Bronx don't inspire any confidence before the last tricky couple of miles in Central Park.

Amazing experience, but as others say, the waiting around in the morning time is painful. Have plenty of throwaway clothes to keep warm out on Staten island. Enjoy.

How do you know which corral is on which deck of the bridge?

If you check in a bag at the start, is it a long walk to collect it at the end? Trying to decide if i should take the option or not, hotel is about 2 miles from the finish.

You should be able tell from the start map.

You will leave your bag in a ups van who will then drive to the finish line. After the finish line you have to walk through Central Park until the exit, this walk is lined with hundreds of these ups vans in numerical order. Couldn't be easier. Definitely do it, you will be on staten islands for hours before hand freezing your **** off. Trust me, I underestimated the start and it cost me big time. You should consider keeping some small change too or if you have a metro card bring it, get the subway back to hotel, 2 miles is a long way after that!

Green goes under the bridge and blue and orange over the bridge. First 2 numbers is your coral number.

I aint checking a bag in because I have my wife waiting for me with clothes.

    When u flying out?

Cool - having check it seems i'm also in the same start corral as average_runner. The tricky decision on hat/glove colour has also been resolved.

Hopefully will be on a plane at this exact time, this day next week.

Looks like they're going to have a fairly challenging race today. The forecast is for 15-20mph headwind for the first 20 miles! Looking forward to catching this later on the internet.

There's a live stream on 7online or some such. The bleedin commentators are wrapped up to the gills! Keep warm boys and girls. Best way of doing that is to run quickly ;)

Is it only average runner, emerald and ellie running this? Usually theres a bit of a gang going for this.

Women's race is going to be a helluva finish. Gap back to Jeptoo is down from 3.20 to 1.18. Game well and truly on.

She's going to go straight past her. Very interesting race.

Wow, caught her faster than I expected her to. No chance of the Ethiopian coming back, no?

Men's race 10k sprint is on! LOL

Imagine if Jeptoo had two straight legs!!!

    Some negative split

    1:16:00 first half
    1:09:07 second half

Wind must have been a big factor too.

Bad luck average runner, I'd say it was a tough old day for it with the wind. Incredible experience alright. Well done on seeing it through.

My cousin finished in 3:55. 1:56 at half way, 1:59 for the second half. Well done him.
