UPC Thompson and other modem

I have the thompson modem and would like to set up my own router (just 'cos). As there's no chance of getting bridge/gateway set up I'm wondering if there's any other way to do this apart from, I think, assigning a static wan ip to the router, outside of the Thompson DHCP pool and setting up the Thompson so the DMZ host is set to the other router WAN IP?

Any issues with VPN and the need to port forward?

BTW, this made sense when I wrote it ..
