Help needed! front suspension nct fail

My 01 VW Bora failed the NCT today with the ball joints on the front suspension. The guy told me that they were fairly damaged and needed to be fixed asap. The thing is it was in for a nct back in april and this issue wasn't highlighted even as a pass/advisory.
I'm wondering how long they should last in terms of mileage because I believe that either it was missed first time or they're taking advantage of my ignorance now!

Get it to a garage. Im sure there is play in them if they have failed you on it. Dont play around with balljoints. Failure of a balljoint will result in a major collapse of your front end.

It's not a major job. I replaced a ball joint this week on my car. 27 euro for the part and a Polish lad fitted it for 20 euro.
The whole NCT is down to who does the test on the day, but a ball joint can wear a good bit in 5 months depending on driving conditions and mileage. 12 years on the ball joint isn't bad really.

It can happen and this made me laugh:D I passed my Lagunas NCT on the second go at the end of March. Last week I put two bottom ball joints, an inner steering tie rod, wheel bearing and two anti roll bar bushings! (Had to drop subframe  ) I kid you not! Id say its genuine. Youd be surprised how quickly things can start wearing out.
