We are buying a second hand cattle trailer, 14ft. It's going to be tractor drawn.

Thinking of buying a Hudson trailer anything thing to look for or trailers to avoid.

    Thanks in advance.

Make sure it has brakes if you have a connection on the tractor, great for stopping in a hurry with a full load.

Pull it at speed with a 4x4 to see if it is pulling straight. Get in underneath and check for welds, rotten timber, wear on leaf springs. I know because my trailer has all these.

if its going to be just tractor drawn, you would probably be better off getting one made for a tractor, not a jeep.

check 4 tyres for uneven wear, sign of bent axle

If it is a jeep one, check it is not stolen!

disregard all post above except highlighted part's, if you are pulling with a tractor all you want is one that will not fall apart. You will find it hard to get a 14' for two reasons first is that they are not out that long and the second is thatl I am looking for one as well.

Just slightly off topic but I'm curious to know how many cattle you would fit in a 14' trailer, assuming 7' wide or so? Would around ten weanlings or six 650kg bullocks be about right?

Put 8 light-medium size stores in a 14x6 (Nugent) but were well packed. Would fit possibly 6 650Kg ones, no more than 5 stronger cattle again.

Ya I had a fair idea of all the above points just was checking to see did I miss anything!

Well we looked at two yesterday and did a fair few miles and we bought one of them because they are like hens teeth to be fair! Our old 11ft was well past it's sell by date! Ur man wanted to sell it because he was sick of people borrowing it.

14 x 5'10'' Ifor williams, I often put 6 good sized cows into it without a bother.

Out of interest if you had the misfortune to have an accident would insurance cover you towing that weight behind the jeep?

I have a 13ft Hamilton myself, beast of a trailer bought it nearly 20 years ago with the auld boy, Alex Hamilton took a look at us and said two of his trailers would do us out our lifetimes... (bearing in mind we had been through about 3 Ivor Williams in the space of 7 years before that we were sceptical but reckon he was right. Anyway, was thinking of going for a 14ft x 6ft, mine is 13 x 5.9 but reckon if I was going to do that, I should be buying a small truck... the insurance question still stands...
