Alfa Gt 1.9d or bmw 320cd ?

My son is looking to change and is looking at these two options for now.
Nothing concrete yet so any other suggestions welcome.
Must be sporty looking and prefer diesel but open to petrol suggestions as well with fairly decent economy.
    Budget 5~7k

    Which one any why?

Only plus for alfa is newer year possible for budget. 320cd look better, handle better, more comfortable, better resale.

I not put them as comparable really.

has a gt going for sale, 1.8 though

forgot to add, prefer the bmw over an alfa without doubt

Is that the only plus is it? Ever driven one or been in one compared to a 320d?

I'd put them both as two door coupes with 4 cylinder diesel engines. Pricewise about the same so fairly comparable in my book. :)

@Vectra - any GT he'd be looking at will be the 150bhp model. These had trouble with the swirl flaps and were often blanked. Think the belt needs to be done regularly enough although I tend to find conflicting figures on what that is exactly.

Gorgeous looking car though if you got a nicely specced one and some reasonable service history to it's name although the same could be said for the BMW!

Has he driven either of them?

Belt on the jtd is at the same interval as the v6.

So 4 years/48000 miles although alfa still say 5 years or 72000 miles.
I think both of us know that 5 years is pushing it.....:pac:

Onl;y plus, yes, in my view.

I have driven both, have you?

Both are fun to drive. Naturally the E46 is going to be a better handler due to wider tyres, rwd etc but the GT does offer similar levels of fun in a more exclusive manner

Jump into both, drive them and see what you think is the best advice I can dish out :)

E46 320d especially decent spec M Sport models go for crazy money. On that budget you could be looking at a fairly leggy one.

    This one looks decent:

Vectra, those Msport E46's are nice, but Bazz is right they do go for crazy money these days. He might get a better example of a GT for his money?

I'd see if he can nab one for a test drive and go from there!

I hate itchy wallet syndrome! :D

I'm thinking the new sign outside my house (see chat thread) has helped her decision making..;)

Living in Swords currently but he just informed me he thinks the Alfa is ugly. :o

    320cd it is then.

Anyone know of good Msport ones point me toward them. ( within reason on price )

If he definitely doing the mileage for diesel?

The CD's command a serious premium over the Ci's. You'd buy an awful amount of M-Sport Petrol and tax for €5-7k.

On the GT; my CEO has one and I think it's starting to look a bit dated, entirely subjective though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,876 ✭✭✭Scortho

It depends on the colour of the gt.
If its flat black it will date very fast.
Likewise silver. I hate silver on an alfa.

I have been looking at Alfa GT's for the last month.

2 of the best petrols with the right colour and interior and history

    http://www.adverts.ie/car/alfa-romeo/gt/2005-alfa-romeo-gt-look-at-pics/3335293

4 BRAND NEW MSW 17" alloys with brand new tyres - €1050! (24/06/2013)

Alloys balanced and tracked - Red Callipers :)

Will come with BRAND NEW nct (car being tested 6/07/2013) had pre-nct last week and 12 MONTHS ROAD TAX - €636!

    and

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/price-drop05-alfa-romeo-gt-2-0/5381005

there is a diesel in same colour

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/alfa-romeo-gt-bmw-320-audi-a3-celica/5589765

but this is an import, bought by seller in May this year.
The guy does not like answering questions.

At the risk of upsetting the Italian fans, I'm gonna say the 320d, the gt is underwhelming to drive, I was very disappointed, and drove 2 more afterwards that were the exact same. They're a beautiful car but that's about it for me.

I haven't drove one so I can't comment on your underwhelming experience.
Does it matter however, as vectras son thinks its ugly?

I thought it was pred racer who made that comment....(who I hope to fu.ck owns an alfa so I can at least hold my head up slightly higher than it is now)

I'd pick the 320 with the M sport.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Just make sure that it is a genuine 320cd M Sport and not a SE with aftermarket bits added on being advertised and priced as a M Sport. The easies way to tell a genuine M Sport is the interior black roof headlining. Very rare to find this retrofitted.
