Claiming tax

Ok, so I have no idea about tax so please go easy on me!

I've been in my job for the last 2 years and I have noticed that the amount of tax I've been paying has been fluctuating quite a bit.

I am leaving this job to move abroad in a month and a friend advised I go in an see if I can get anything from claiming tax back.

Can anyone tell me if there's much chance I'll get anything back? And how would I do this, for example do I need to get anything from my employer before going into the tax office about it?

If you are leaving work next month to go abroad, then you will have two months of unused tax credits and possibly cut off (if you are on the top marginal rate) so you should be due something back alright. Google form p50 and complete it when you leave. Submit it together with your p45 that you get to Revenue and you will get issued your refund.

.......this of course is based on the fact you were paying the correct tax throughout the year with correct tax credits claimed :)

Thanks so much for the advice!

So you're saying to leave it until just before I leave to go in? I was thinking I'd go in now, is that a bad idea? Bearing in mind I will be working for the next month.

Can't do anything until you finish work . Then just send in p51
