I am 15 months into an 18 month contract but really want to get away from the mobile phone provider that I am with due to various reasons.

I want to port my number over to Prepay on another network. Will my old provider release my number although the contract is not up. I assume they will bill me afterwards with a cancellation fee, ie. whats left on the contract, which I will pay but more important to me is will they let me port my number away?

Yes they should let you port away, but as you said they will bill you the remaining of the contract
