I'm on the way to view a car at the moment, but the car is actually going to be my dad's. Can I sign the logbook as 'munkymanmatt pp my dad' or is it not allowed?

    Thanks in advance

    Give them a call:

Very easily, I'm simply acting as an agent for my dad and buying the car for him. Just wondering whether it has to be his signature for the logbook.

Never thought of ringing them thanks for that!

I've signed a lot of logbooks for a lot of cars that weren't mine. It's never been an issue whatsoever.

AFAIK signing someone else's name on a document is not legal unless you have Power of Attorney for that person.

You could commit fraud and sign another persons name in your hand writing but technically this is not legal.

Finally got through and the lady I spoke to said I cannot pp it and if I signed my own name I'd have to send in a copy of a court stamped document stating I have power of attorney.

Don't know what to do now as I am nearly there now and no way my dad can get here in the next few weeks. Car will surely be sold to someone else by then.

put it in your name. when the registration document arrives next week, transfer ownership to your dad

Buy the car in your name then sign it over to him when he's around.

If your dad definitely wants the car and is going to be the owner / user, why not just sign his name on the VLC?

No can do, we've changed insurance on to this car in advance so I can drive it home, told them the car will belong to dad. If I register it to myself my insurance can be declared invalid. Dad is asleep at the moment (different time zone) so can't ring insurance co to change that.

    Any other ideas?
Appreciate the help by the way lads

Ask the seller if they will let you take the VLC with you (which they rightly might refuse), sign it whatever way you want at the time then tipex out (it will be accepted) the name and put in the correct one later then post it.

I contacted the insurance co pretending I was my dad. They refused to alter the policy so that a named driver is the registered owner of the car - they said the policy holder must own the car.

    I've had an idea though.
I sign the logbook as myself, but saying I bought the car yesterday. I immediately agree to sell to my dad and when the logbook arrives I say he bought off me today. This would keep the insurance valid for me to drive it home (insurance only having been switched to the new car today)

    Thanks for all the help!

I know I did make a big deal out of it but I'd a very long drive home with the car I bought and I wanted to make sure everything was legal if possible. Better safe than sorry and all that
