    Howr things?

Just noticed today one of my recently purchased bullocks has developed a 'cloudy' eye with a lot of discharge. The animal seemed withdrawn and was away from the rest of the herd. He is a HEX and is about 13 months old. Should i separate him from rest rest of herd and ring vet or will it clear up in time?

    thanks

If your not happy with him it's probably best that the Vet sees him.
There may well be a couple of issues and treating the eye alone may not be enough. It can be a stressful time on a recently purchased animal, some of them don't do well with transit, marts etc.
On the issue of the eye, I've seen cloudy eyes treated by applying Opticlox, but again if your not happy talk to your Vet.

I cleared a weanling last year that was very bad... optilox as mentioned and 1.5ml of alamycin into top eyelid and it dribbles out slowly onto face of eyeball as he winks etc

had vet out today and she looked at a cows eye i had treated with opticlox on sunday, it had improved well, she said last year she tried 5 different treatments on eyes, ie injecting eye lid , opticlox etc, the best she said was one injection of nuflor- where ever it goes im or sc... BUT you cannot use nuflor in milking cows, i just gave my cow another go of opticlox

Yea he gave me some opticlox and said to try if for 3-4 days, when i was bringing the affected animal in to treat him i noticed another of the newly bought animals had the same problem so i'll have to get another bit for him and see how we go :(

Usually fire in part of a mastitis tube here. Had not though about putting in a drop or so of alamycin injection, but have heard about lads getting on well just spraying alamycin straight in, handy for an animal that is difficult to handle.

by god she mustnt have tried much if she considered nuflor as a treatment for clouded eyes

Not sure but I doubt it the reason that for eye infections we use drops and creams straight into eye or inject into eyelid is that there is little blood flow into that area so to get a antibiotic into it is best to put directly into eye. However check with vet,

Creams into eye is very good saw a lad put antibiotic(penstrep) directly under eyelid with a syringe however animal did not like it.

I myself usually use opticlox into eye and keep the animal away from other animals as it is an infection that can spread very fast. However I have used LA Mastitis tubes rather than spin to vet. Have not tried Allmycin spray yet.

If your animal has pink eye it will spread to other cattle rapidly so better isolate the animal
I use the mastitis tubes as well and also put penicillin directly onto the eye also for pink eye, to prevent pink eye and dry cow mastitis I spray jeyes fluid ( diluted) on the cows from time to time it works a treat to keep the flies off
I agree with thd previous post that some cattle do not deal with moving farms well

That's something I've never tried.. The blue alamycin into the eye... With it just been an aerosol all I could think of is what gas that its mixed with would it further irritate the eye... ? Could be all in my head but I'd rather a cool ointment/tube/liquid on a sore eye than spray
