So need a little help with another build. The brother is looking for a PC. I have this with the upgraded PSU, and some of those parts are no longer available, so would be looking for a similar build without the SSD.

    - He will need it for Music Editing/Creation (Ableton) and video editing/creation.
    - No need for software/windows
    - Looking for a HD (preferably 26") monitor also
    - Left on for hours at a time

Budget - €700. I will build it myself. And preferably from hardwareversand.de, bought my own rig there and it was an easy and hassle free experience (and cheapest!)

    Cheers!

Edit: Forgot to mention he has an external soundcard so no need for one!

So i'm using my own guide to build the same without the SSD (RAM must have been on offer, it's nearly twice what i paid for it now!), and the PowerColor Radeon 7970 is cheaper than the 7850 (which i assume is the better card), but now i can't add the PSU as the site won't load the page, same with monitors and clicking the PC Components link. Loads a blank page for them, but i can go into all other ones???

Does the 700 include a monitor? As it would be extremely hard to get a 26" and video editing pc for that price. If you fill out the template it may make it easier for people to spec a build.

Ram prices have sky rocketed in the last few months.

Just off the phone with him, and he has another €150 for a monitor/tv (told him he'd be lucky for a 26" at that price). This is what i have for him:

    Item|Price
BitFenix Shinobi Midi-Tower USB 3.0 black, ohne Netzteil|€53.03
    ASRock Z77 Pro3, Sockel 1155, ATX|€81.89
    Intel Core i5-3570K Box, LGA1155|€200.84
    8GB G.Skill RipJaws-X PC3-12800U CL10|€56.75
Special item: PowerColor Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition V2, 2GB DDR5|€176.03
    WD Caviar Blue 1TB 6Gb's|€56.69
    Super-Flower Amazon 80Plus 450W|€45.88
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€690.10

    Here's the template anyway.

    1. What is your budget? €700 + €150 for monitor/tv

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Music Creation/Editing, Video Editing, Animation

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? External Soundcard

    5. Do you need a monitor? Yes

    5. If yes, what size do you need. 26" but anything near with full HD

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Wireless kb/m (not immediately necessary)

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Prefer not to (as i don't know what i'd be doing)

    8. How can you pay? Debit Card/Bank Transfer

    9. When are you purchasing? Thursday

I changed a few bits purely because you wouldnt be overclocking.

    Heres what I specced:
    Item|Price
    Intel Core i5-4570 Box, LGA1150|€174.90
    Cooltek Antiphon Black, ohne Netzteil|€63.00
    LiteOn iHAS124-04 schwarz SATA|€16.11
    Seagate Barracuda 7200 1000GB, SATA 6Gb/s|€56.69
    8GB-Kit G-Skill RipJaws PC3-12800U CL9|€57.69
    be quiet! Pure Power L7 530 Watt|€58.29
    ASRock H87 Pro4, Sockel 1150, ATX|€78.63
    Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660Ti OC, 2GB GDDR5, 2x DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort|€179.00
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€703.30

€3 over budget but im sure if you use geizhals.de you can shave about 20-30 quid off that price. Few things different from yours:
Went with 4th gen intel, it will be slightly faster than the 3570k if you dont plan on over clocking.
Motherboard is a non overclocking one and has more usb 3 ports
Graphics card is better and the one you listed was a special item which means customer returned
Quiter case as i assume it would be better when working with music. Available in different colours
    Quiter and higher power psu

If you could spare it I would recommend upgrading to 16GB of ram if he is doing a lot of video editing as it can be intensive on the ram. But if its not much 8gb will be fine. Also aded a dvd drive incase you need one.

Not too clued up on monitors personally, im sure others will have suggestions.

Cheers for that! Must have a look at that site you mentioned too, any money off it good! He can always add more RAM further down the line anyway, and the editing won't be too intensive at the moment i'd imagine (he's still learning). And at the price he has for the monitor he's probably better off getting it in a shop when you factor in delivery!

Yeah its great, even if it only covers for the cost of delivery its money saved. Could always look at hardware versand for monitors though aswell seeing as you wont have to pay any more for postage. Just bear in mind that the system cant be over clocked so if its a possibility you would need a different set up altogether.

Your brother teaching himself or doing a multimedia course out of interest?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,382 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Neither of us will be overclocking, i know a good bit but i wouldn't be confident enough to do it. And knowing my luck i'd blow it up.

He's doing a course, was initially music production, but he's branching out into the video side of it now too. He's a DJ who's currently on a small label, niche market, but is big into creation also, and is teaching others on the label. He want's to start doing video editing for promotional material for the label, and for other interests of his (MMA) and others. Currently doing Advanced Multimedia and Web Development.

Good stuff, in that case that build should be fine. 8gb ram will be enough for basic video editing but if he does indeed need more grunt he can add another dual channel kit in the future.

Was just interested because im actually starting a similar course tomorrow. Doing Creative multimedia in Clonmel :)

Anyway wait until you get another suggestion or two before making your mind up :)

Ah in fairness, i don't think we're going to get much better! And the money is going into my account tomorrow, and the mortgage is due Friday so it has to be bought Thursday! Pity that the case won't be in stock till the 27th, but he don't mind waiting.

Best of luck in the course! Something i thought i would've done but took a completely (unexpected) route in my employment, and now i'm stuck! Then again, i was born 10 years too early for my passion, gaming!

Oh my bad about the case. I know this will push you over budget a little but possibly not if you factor in the savings from using geizhals on most items. http://www.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?adp=0&aid=68209&agid=631&apop=3

Its a superb case and one of the top quiet cases out there. Saves you waiting 3 weeks just for a case.

And thanks, just hope theres work out there in the future when im finished :P

Any gaming? G-card choices are overkill if not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,382 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

If i can figure out how to use gezheils, i'll probably pick up that one instead so.

@BloodBath: Doubt he'll be doing any gaming, but does he not need a good GPU for the video editing?

A bit over budget but if you use the discount site you might get it below €850.

Managed to squeeze an 8 thread xeon and 16gb of ram in + a small ssd for windows and his programs.

    Item|Price
    Intel Xeon E3-1230v2, boxed, LGA1155|€201.67

Excellent stuff, great build with the monitor included. The only thing he doesn't like about it is the uncertainty of when the RAM and MB will be available. He's kinda in a hurry to get it now that the funds are there! And he really doesn't need the SSD as of yet, even with my attempts to sell it to him (possibly the best investment i made on my own one).

Anyone know what hardwareversand are like with the "Unknown Dispatch Date"s? He'll be lodging the money tomorrow morning/midday, so i'll be going with Recurves build for this reason.

Edit: Using both examples above, i done a bit of mixing, adding and subtracting, and using geizhals, i've come up with this.
    - I've gone down from 16gb to 8gb RAM, as i don't think it's necessary right now and can always be bought further down the line
    - I've changed the MB to one that seems similar to H77, a Z77 Pro4 - Is there going to be much of a difference?
    - Stuck with the GTX 650Ti Boost as i don't see much of a difference between that and the 660Ti OC, probably nothing he will notice anyway - no gaming

    Item|Price
    Intel Xeon E3-1230v2, boxed, LGA1155|€197.28
    Gigabyte GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost EditionWindforce 2X, 2GB GDDR5, VGA, 2x DVI, HDMI|€142.49
    Cooler Master N300, ATX-Midi-Tower, schwarz, ohne Netzteil|€31.45
    LiteOn iHAS124-04 schwarz SATA|€14.75
    Seagate Barracuda 7200 1000GB, SATA 6Gb/s|€52.90
    8GB-Kit G-Skill RipJaws PC3-12800U CL9|€54.25
    be quiet! Pure Power L7 530 Watt|€54.14
    ASRock Z77 Pro4, Sockel 1155, ATX|€87.94
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€654.19

Reason for this is the availability of parts.

Anyone give me a yay or nay on the build above, he's transferring the money now!

Edit: Ordered it anyway! Hope it's all ok! Thank you to everyone!

That will be fine. Can you do me a favor when you get that. Check to see if you can overclock the xeon with the z77 board. Asrock boards support some overclocking on non k chips with z77 boards but I don't know if it works with the xeons or not.

Can you have a look and see if the option is there. I can't remember what they call it but there should be a separate overclocking option there if it's available.

Will do, i'll be putting it together but i'm getting someone more technical minded to set it up and install the OS, so i'll ask him to have a look.
