    Hi salmonman
I recently started using the evernote app. Although not designed specifically for farmers, I have found it excellent for doing exactly what you are looking todo, ie. record daily farming events, dates and info.

Evernote is a dedicated notetaking app. It's main strength lies in it’s simplicity and easeof use. With just a few taps of thetouch screen a key piece of information is captured. There are a number of different formats in which a note can be taken namely:
    • Text - type in your note
    • Audio - use your phone like a Dictaphone to record a note
    • Photo - take a picture and save as a note
    • Page camera - 'scan in' receipts, pages, animal passports, machinery manuals, crop spray instructions etc
    • Web clipper - copy pieces from web pages and file and save for reference

Great says you, but what good is all this to me?
Well if we take your dosing situation for example. You go to the coop to buy your dose. You can scan in the sales docket so that thenext time you have to go, you can find out what product you bought, when youbought it and how much it cost…. even who you dealt with. Then out in the pen/crush, you could use theaudio function to record the tag numbers of the animals you dosed instead ofhaving to write them down on a soggy sh*t soaked corner of the cornflakes boxwith a leaky biro that won’t write! Youcould take a picture of an animal or animals for reference.

Another great thing about this app, is it that if you breakor lose your phone, all the info and data that you have captured is notlost. All is saved to your free passwordedevernote account. It can be easilyretrieved on any other device, be it a new phone, laptop, tablet ordesktop computer. I suppose this is the cloud computing that all the IT professionals are raving about. Once you come insideand clean yourself up, you can sit down, fire up the laptop and all your notesare there for further editing and filing away.

You can organise your notes into notebooks, so for example so far I have set up notebooks for:
    • Dosing
    • Silage
    • Fertiliser
    • Slurry
    • Mart statements
    • Spraying
    • Grassland management
    • Stock
Because of the way things can be filed, it is very easy to retrieve the info. I think this is another key feature of this app. No point having a load of info if you don't have it to hand or can't find it exactly when you need it!
Look, you may have no meas on it at all. The only way to find out is to give it a go. It does take a little getting used to, but stick with it. As I say the app is free for a certain amount of upload data. To be honest I can't see myself reaching this monthly limit. You can upgrade to a premium account for €40 (I think) with greater upload limits if needs be.

Hope this is of some help

An App I use is the Teagasc fert tracker. It allows you track exactly your N P and K.

You simply fill in your allowances at the start of the year, when I do my nitrates is when I fill in. As the year progresses each time you spread enter tonnage and type and it counts back wards. At least you'll know when you've run out of rope and can take action!!!!!

It's free and I would recommend I find very helpful

You do not need to be a member to use it
