How long does it take to upgrade ps3 hard drive?

    I have ps3 super slim 12GB.

I want Grand Theft Auto 5 but not enough space unless I completely wipe it.

Considering purchasing a hard drive, but will be getting the ps4.

If I buy a hard drive, install it into the ps3, I will most likely get a 1TB one (as they seem to be the best value for money) and:
    1. Put 1TB in ps3 to play GTA
    2. When I buy the ps4, take the 500GB out
    3. Take the 1TB out of the ps3
    4. Put 1TB in the ps4, and 500GB in the ps3
    5. This seems like alot of hassle, how long does it take to back up the system etc, in your experience?

    Thanks :pac:

For Adding a HDD to the 12GB it's very fast, all you need is the HDD and the metal mount. The PS3 will copy everything from the 12GB to the new HDD and then disable the 12GB. This will be relatively fast.

For the second part where you want to swap around the HDD it'll depend on how much space you're using on the PS3 at that point, but I've recently did the same with 2 PS3s (500GB and 1TB) and it took forever.

One VERY important point!!....you **must** download the latest firmware onto a USB stick, as once you install the new HDD the PS3 will request you install the firmware.

The USB flash drive should be, or must be formatted to FAT32, DL here:

The install and HDD upgrading the very easy, 30 mins tops....take your time, dont loose the screws. I'd go for 1TB myself....WD Scorpio Blue is well rated.

It takes HOURS to backup a PS3.....several hours, it depends on how much you have installed. You can backup to any external HDD....as long as its formatted to FAT32.

It takes a very long time, but yeah there is no easier way to do it....swapping drives of the PS3 - PS4 + you'll have to install the firmware for both consoles.

I've never had to use a USB to install the firmware.
I've upgraded my HDs a few of times.
It may be a "recommended", but it's not a "must".

Not long for the physical part. It was only a matter of a screw and then a few more screws that hold the existing HD in a case.
It may take time to copy over your data and to install the firmware. I think I used a 950Gb external HD via USB and the process was pretty automatic

when i done this i had to go into safe mode to get it work properly

after installing the HDD & turning on the ps3 i got a message if i wanted to use the HDD instead of the internal memory
after trying to copy it over it failed & a message appeared that the HDD wasn't formatted correctly (i think), so format it now & that completed successfully
tried copying from the internal memory to the HDD again but i got the same message about it not being formatted correctly

so you might need to boot into safe mode & install it that way - i think this was what i found/followed when looking it up back then
