VENICE – Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki will retire after making eleven features that have secured him a spot among the world’s most beloved and visionary toon meisters.

This sad news was announced by Koji Hoshino, head of Studio Ghibli to stunned reporters during a presser at the Venice Film Festival where Miyazaki’s latest work, “The Wind Rises,” screened to enthusiastic response.

It is sad to see the great Miyazaki Hayao retiring (Looks like we probably won't see that mooted Nausicaa sequel) But he couldn't stay on forever.

I'm a bit mixed on this. While Miyazaki has given us some of the greatest animated films of all time (Totoro, Spirited Away, Mononoke and, my favourite, Porco Rosso) at least his retirement may give others a chance to shine. Maybe Ghibli have relied too much on Miyazaki and Isao Takahata and now it's time for some new blood. While Goro Miyazaki's "Tales From Earthsea" wasn't great his "From Up on Poppy Hill" was a great film reminiscent of "Only Yesterday" and I loved Hiromasa Yonebayashi's Arrietty. I know Miyazaki had a large part to play in these movies as well (I believe he did most of the storyboarding for Arrietty) and I can't wait for "The Wind Rises" and "Princess Kaguya", but maybe (hopefully) the mighty Studio Ghibli is in good hands....... What do ye think?

Aww, and I only read the other day there was talk of a Nausicaa sequel happening :(

Fair point it could give the other talents at Ghibli a chance to shine though.

Actually, much more excitingly, Miyazaki and Hideaki Anno of Evangelion fame has been teasing the potential Nausicca sequel could be handled by the latter. It makes sense - Anno has expressed much interest in it, and Miyazaki is seemingly encouraging it. Plus, they've collaborated on the recent short before Eva 3.0 and Anno provides the voice of the main character in The Wind Rises. If there's one person aside from Miyazaki I'd love to handle something like that, it's Anno.

As for the retirement, I have an automatic "oh, Hayao!" response when I heard it, because the man has announced his retirement so often and has ended up being drawn back in for various reasons. He is at the age where it could well be definitive now, but given his track record I would not be surprised if, three years hence, he did pop up with a new feature. Happened as recently as Ponyo!

I have no major problem the baton being passed to a younger generation, although happy at least we have another Takahata and Miyazaki to savour in the meantime.
