I'll be getting work experince in this area next year, just wondering, what is the proper name of this job and what should I be expecting?

My mate told me that the guy i'll be having my work experince with, he manufactures the chips that are used on the electronic equipment on board of aircraft. Should I be expecting a large factory or something like a lab for this? Also what degrees would be needed if any are needed to aquire this job?
