Hit the topper off a ring of a tree , my own fault , went too close to the ditch & it didn't break the shearbolt on that occasion .......I have a noticible vibration since when topper is raised on rushes ect but is grand when on the ground, thinking about sorting it, Is it likely to be the gearbox shaft, or should I just get a new gearbox......
Topper is too good to forget about and go new.....How much are the gearboxes, its an abbey simi offset 5/6ft bout 9 years old..

New gear box is about 230. Wouldn't buy one unless ure sure it's needed.

Did you check the nut on the shaft of the gearbox? Same problem as you during summer. Split pin broke and nut of shaft came loose one day with the ould lad. Ould lad keep working it for the day and damage mounting that hold up blades. Replaced this and working perfect since.

    interesting.....
On inspection of underside I did notice that there was a considerable amount of play ...as in - when holding the blade I could lift and drop it a couple of inches but the split pin is in place.....I took out the splitpin but hadn't a large socket or wrench to tighten nut which wasn't loose with a vicegrip on it........all I was doing was turning gearbox pto ect

hit a stone with the topper last year and there was serious vibration off it afterwards - got a second hand gearbox for £150 from a guy who bought a new topper and shes going perfect since

Gearboxes are easily repaired, parts are expensive compared to a new box, get a new one and thereafter you can cannibalise your old one as, if like me, you'll probably break it again sometime:rolleyes:

I have a major trailed and there is also vibration on one of gearboxes. I drained the oil and the main gear has one tooth broken. I have been quoted 200 for a new gear and probably 2 new bearings @ €20 each. A new major t box is coming in at over €400. Most people have recommended to get a new box?? Is the gearbox on your topper a comer?

Think its comer on the abbey's but not sure....would one tooth cause a vibration like that?
anyone have any success getting vibration out without changing box?

Yes Comer gearboxes on Abbey toppers too.

Indeed they are fitted to practically all toppers.
