    Hi there.

    PTO Problem
Having difficulty engaging PTO on MF 165, have to turn tractor off and engage just as its turning off, then restart with PTO going, Just wondering does this damage the tractor in any way.

Would it be the clutch not catching enought to select PTO?

    Servicing MF 165
Regarding giving the mf 165 a service. Should have been done long time ago, but as its a typical tractor for odd jobs, and you dont notice things until you are using it, Was thinking of changing filters and oil etc. Is there different filters for different variants of mf 165, dont know the year of it, where would you find out. NB. exhaust on left hand side of cab.

Regarding servicing I would say go the whole hog and replace every filter and oil in the machine: engine oil +filter; power steering filter if there is one; replace coolant in radiator; fuel filters; transmission oil and filter. If the exhaust is one the left then it's a Perkins A4.203 engine with 58hp. Not sure if the engine oil filters would be different so your best bet would be to get them from a MF dealer.

As for the PTO problem: do you push the clutch all the way to the floor? My dads 35x is a bit of a dog to engage, I have to stand up and hold onto the steering wheel before I can get enough force to push it down.

    Hope this helps.

Many thanks for replies. Quite busy at the moment , so il have a look when i get a chance and let you's know.

another issue(s) i may as well raise while im here before i give it a check over.
1)Power steering seems to catch at each full lock direction. i give it a grease by opening the front grill and greasing the bearing located under the steering ram. would it be the ram catching at full lock. its quite tought to shift, harder than non-power steering at full lock and reuqires a bit of wrestling to correct it , then the steerings as light as you would like within the straight forward position.

    2) Lift arms drop after the tractor is switched off. you wouldnt notice it straight away, but they are down when you come back after few hours, with something as light as a powerwasher or link box, is this normal?

Same with mine, it may just be a thing with the 165.

    update:
spent a bit of time yesterday working at the clutch as suggested by someone in hope that it wil allow the PTO to engage easier. Still no difference, even by brining clutch fully back with a flat bar to check if clutch was the problem. Does the PTO have a clutch or what else could it be,

as mentioned, its making a fierce grinding noise when u try to engage it, and rarely can it just slip in and engage without turning the engine off

It's a loooooong time since I've been into the works of a 1** series tractor clutch, but here goes:

Your tractor does indeed have a PTO clutch.
It's assembled into the clutch cover assembly (aka: pressure plate), and is concentric with the main drive clutch.
When you press down the clutch pedal, the first part of its travel disengages the main drive clutch, and if you press it down further, it disengages the PTO clutch.
The PTO clutch mechanism only starts to move when all the slack and pressure has been taken up by the main drive clutch mechanism, so, as the main clutch plate, pressure plate, and flywheel wear down, the two clutches move further and further 'away' from each other.
Eventually, you get to the point where the two clutches are so far 'apart' that the PTO clutch no longer fully disengages, no matter how far down you push the pedal.
At this point, the clearance in the clutch mechanism must be adjusted to allow for the wear in the main clutch.
Unless you're splitting the tractor, this is done through an access plate under the bellhousing.
You'll need suitable spanners, screwdriver, and feeler gauges.
Once the correct clutch clearance has been re-established, pedal height can be correctly set by adjusting the external linkage.

Attached is a (middling quality, sorry :( ) scan of the relevant part of the service manual for slightly older, but very similar, models of tractor.
ADJUSTING THE SECONDARY PRESSURE PLATE CLEARANCE is the section you want, starting at the bottom of page 2.

You might be able to adjust this without opening the plate under the tractor. The holes in the pushrod from the pedal and pins get worn. I take it that you cleaned the dirt out from under the pedal and from the back of the pedal. The pedal should hit the floor.
Find the shaft in the side of the tractor that turns when you push down the pedal. Mark the clamp and rod so you can put them back in the same place. Loosen the nut on the clamp. Lift the pedal up until you have taken up all the play in the linkage( now you see the wear!) and then lift the pedal another inch. the clamp should move a small bit around the shaft. There is a hole in the shaft to stop it turning on you, I can,t remember if it does. Tighten the nut on the clamp, now try the clutches. Make sure the main clutch is not slipping when pressure comes on. If this doent work maybe try moving it more otherwise you will have to adjust it internally.

Even my 398 does that, it's something worn in the lift pump I think but it's nothing to worry about
