Advice on restoring an old veil

    Hi,

I am looking for advice on restoring an old veil. It is my mother-in-law's veil which she wore 38 years ago. She dug it out for me a few weeks ago but it was rolled up in a ball in a plastic bag at the back of a press. She hand-washed it herself and air-dried it after her wedding and it was never hung up after so it was severely creased. Other than the creases, it is in very good condition. It has a lace trim, all of which is still intact. I brought it to my local dry-cleaners who steamed it and then washed and steamed it to try to get rid of the creases. It did help somewhat but it really just looks flatter than it did but the creases are still noticeable. Could anyone recommend a specialist I could bring it to that could have a go at improving it?

    Any advice appreciated.

You probably just need to hang it up for a few weeks so that the creases naturally fall out of it.

You could ask the shop where you bought your dress - I'm sure when they get orders in, they're probably shipped any old way to make the parcels as small as possible and arrive a crumpled mess.

Surprised at the dry cleaners not being able to sort you out though. There are some specialist dry cleaners in Dublin who claim to specialize in weddings but they cost an absolute fortune e.g. Grafton Cleaners and another one in Baggott St, so try other avenues first.

Craft Cleaners on the corner of Mespil Rd / Baggot St are brilliant.
