There are direct flights from Bangkok to Ko Samui. Bangkok Airlines and Thai International Airlines both do them.

You've only got the two choices mentioned by MRG77 and they're never cheap. The lack of competition is down to Bangkok Airways owning the airport.

Bangkok Airways fly from a few places to and from Samui so Bangkok isn't your only option.

thanks guys. though air asia is very cheap a 5 hr trip to get to koh samui - is it worth it? looking at getting from koh samui to chiang mai and with air asia only €100 but looking at guts of a day travelling - about 7hrs via bangkok or €200 for 1-3hr flight from koh samui airport

Depends on your budget, how much you value your time, how long your holiday is for. Personally I'd take the Ko Samui flight. It's one of the coolest airports I've ever been in, and beats taking a long boat ride and then transferring on to another airport.

I was in Ko Samui two years ago and took the Overnight train and Bus/Ferry combo to get down there and then I flew back one-way to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi afterwards for €105/one-way. Another thing to remember is that Air Asia flys to & from Don Muang and not Suvarnabhumi in Bangkok if making connecting flights onwards but there is a free shuttle bus between the airports once you have your itinerary or ticket to show you are flying. Allow 2 hours to go between airports, it will take less than this but build in some contingency spare time nonetheless.

If doing the Train be very careful of the Bus & Ferry legs of your belongings because theft is rife on this route and always carry your valuables on your person. I got stung two years ago on the route with a company called Songserm. The train itself is secure it is the bus from the train station to the pier you have to watch out for as they open your bags in the hold of the bus underneath and steal stuff, I had US$200 lifted and there is stories of ipads, cameras, laptops, etc going missing from bags on these routes very often when a little common-sense and forewarning can prevent a holiday nightmare.
