    Presuming that all the research is correct I'd suggest that the O'Neill dynasty is one where there does exist records of marriages and births outside of the usual church and civil records. I'd imagine that this may also be the case for some of the other important pre-17th century Gaelic families?

    The tricky part is linking up modern day (19th/20th century) family to those that are already documented in earlier times. Having the 'right' family name helps I guess but for the most part the majority of us can only get back to as far as the early 19th C.
