There's a huge difference, the Mk5 GTI is worlds away from the Mk4, much better engine, handling and spec. Pricewise your probably looking at atleast €6k for the cheapest Mk5.

The price difference between the two is huge. In terms of performance, comfort, handling etc the Mk5 is worlds apart from the mk4. 50bhp more out of the box, nicer interior and independent rear suspension are 3 biggies

I know pricewise theres a huge difference .. for a clean mk5 golf that hasnt been abused prob looking at 8 grand at least looked at a few and some of them had least 5 owners on them and are rough around the edges. I was just wondering would a mk4 Gti 180 bhp version be a good buy ??. I have no car at the moment so getting out to view cars is a pain in the hole..:(

so i take it the mk4 is not very good ha

It used to be owned by a member on here,it would have been leaps and bounds ahead of a mk4 GTI in terms of handling and power,a mk4 GTI would be a complete disappointment to you having owned that.

The mk5 GTI is a different beast altogther,in standard form the wouldn't be as powerful as the leon was but a map will fix that.Handling wise it would be day and night over a mk4 GTI with the rear independent suspension set up. Your leon had KW coilovers os the MK5 wouldn't be as 'tight' but it still wouldn't disapoint.

    How about a 210bhp JCW Mini :)

Yeah the leon was a nice car. things just changed with work and that so i had to sell it on and get a diesel.. I am in a different position now and doing 12k a year so maybe considering a hot hatch. dont want anything to highly modified.. I always liked both mk4 and mk5 golf Gti so just looking for some info..would the mk4 gti not be as fun to drive even with a remap and one or two mods ?

The MK4 GTI would be a step back, youve had a mk4 based 1.8T car one of the best around, the only mk4 based car that would be a progression after that is an S3 or a Cupra R both with a map.

In the standard form the MK4 GTI is underpowered, handles woefully, stops as poorly, looks no different from anyother highlne MK4 and has no bespoke touches like GTI exclusive seats, interior or wheels - all these problems were sorted out big time with the MK5 GTI.

What about a MkII Octavia vRS? Same platform and engine from the MkV Gti.

May be the same car under the skin but imo they are an ugly lardy looking bus.

Still better than a MkIV GTi though.

As an owner of a mk4 GTi my recommendation would be to buy the mk5 GTi :pac:
As much as I love mine, I would still rather the mk5. At my time of the mk5 was just out of my price range and insurance at the time would have been crazy.

As a few people have said the mk5 was the comeback of the GTi. VW lost their ways with the mk3 and mk4 unfortunatly

I've never driven a vRS octavia but I'm sure you're right, the mk4 gti is fairly poor as standard.

There are a few 2008 Leon fr's on carzone for around €9k, better looking outside than the octavia but the interior is very plain.

A clean Mk4 GTi can be a great looking car, they seem to have all but vanished though. But as they say above not rated too highly as a drivers car.

sound think ill stay away from the mk4 then :D.. sound for the advice

Mk5 GTI + B road = happiness. The handling is perfectly matched for the ability of the perky little turbo.

Out of the box, the MK5 is by far the better car in all aspects.

However it doesnt take much to get a MK4 to a good standard - add a H&R Sport Cup kit and upgraded anti-roll bars and it will give many a MK5 a good run.

In saying that, if I had the budget id buy the MK5.

Maybe but they still feel lifeless compared to something with steering feel and a good chassis setup.

Yeah would need to add a remap and brakes to the list of imporvements needed on a mk4 GTI also, then again if you spent all that money on a mk5 GTI....

Remap certainly, wouldnt bother with brakes for road use. Maybe a decent set of pads with decent fluid and lines but I wouldnt be bothered buying Brembos for it.

I do agree, the Mk5 is a much better platform but I wouldnt be so quick to write the MK4 off is all.
