I recall the time he left Robin Cook flustered in an interview. I was watching the Frost-Nixon film only a few days ago. He had the knack of disarming people and was attentive to detail, despite his seemingly laid- back manner.

As a child of the 80s I grew up with David on the telly mid week quite a lot.

through the keyhole and (I think) this is your life. He was a straight talking journalist who rarely minced his words.

I heard him being described once as a ver truthful names dropper. If David said something like I was talking to the queen last week, or when I had dinner with the prime minister last night, it's because he actually had.

My Mam spent half of dinner talking about him. He was married about 4 times or something. Anyway, one of the wives was asked to marry him and went back to the convent she was raised in to get her Mother Superior's advice (apparently). The Mother Superior asked what he did, she said 'he's in journalism and television'. The Mother Superior wasn't impressed, so she asked if he was at all spiritual. And the fiancee said 'Oh yes Sister, he thinks he's God all the time'.
